Cristiano Ronaldo's Free-Kick Record At Major Tournaments Is Horrific

Cristiano Ronaldo has not produced the goods from dead-ball situations at major international tournaments.

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 107 goals for Portugal and is the European Championship all-time top scorer with 12 across the competitions he's featured in.

But despite the many records Ronaldo holds, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's free-kick record at major tournaments is far from impressive.

In the 4-2 defeat to Germany, where Ronaldo scored and assisted another, the 36-year-old took his 50th direct free-kick at a tournament.

He used his signature stance and trademark 'knuckleball' technique but the strike was anything but clean as Ronaldo's effort was wayward and ended up in the stands.

It continued a dismal record of set-pieces for the Juventus superstar, who has scored just one direct free-kick over the years.

The dead-ball goal in question was a superb late leveller to complete a hat-trick past David De Gea in the 3-3 draw with Spain at the 2018 World Cup.

But that was the only occasion where Ronaldo found the net from a free-kick. To put things into perspective, his former Real Madrid colleague Gareth Bale has scored two from six attempts - both coming in the Euro 2016 group stages.

Incredibly, Spurs player Eric Dier has a perfect free-kick record at tournaments, having taken one and scored one in glorious fashion against Russia five years ago.

We've seen Ronaldo smash in a slew of free-kicks over the years but his record at club level of late is also poor. In March, it was reported that he had scored just one of the 72 he took at Juventus.

Carlo Pinsoglio, the third choice goalkeeper at Juventus, suggested the shocking conversion rate was merely down to bad luck.

"Cristiano always takes free-kicks in training and he scores them all the time," he told Tuttosport.

"I don't know why he can't do it in games, maybe it's just bad luck."
