Michael Carrick problem exposed as Man Utd equal abysmal 50-year record with Everton draw

Manchester United have equalled an abysmal 50-year record after dropping points in a 2-2 draw against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Bryan Mbeumo initially gave Michael Carrick's men the lead shortly after the break, scoring his second of the season before Tyrique George announced himself to the Toffees faithful with a stunning strike past Senne Lammens seven minutes from time.

United then thought they'd secured a last-gasp victory when substitute Benjamin Sesko leapt the highest as his header squirmed past Jordan Pickford, but Ainsley Maitland-Niles had other ideas, producing an unstoppable drive into the top left corner in the final minute of added time.

Aitland-Miles only secured a transfer to Everton from Lyon on Deadline Day, instantly endearing himself to his new supporters in the best way possible, while putting a dagger into Carrick's heart.

The Red Devils almost clinched a priceless victory on the road, but have now dropped points in two of their opening Premier League games.

In fact, this is only the second time in the last 50 years that Man United have conceded 2+ goals in each of their first three matches of a league season, also doing so in 2020/21.

Carrick's side have shipped twice against newly-promoted Hull City, Ipswich Town and now Everton, as their defensive problems continue.

A worrying trend of conceding high-quality chances arguably stems from their disappointing transfer window when United failed in their attempts to sign a left-back.

Although Luke Shaw was improved against Everton, providing the assist for Sesko's goal, the Englishman did need some competition.

INEOS made it clear that Lewis Hall was their top target, but Newcastle United weren't willing to offload the 21-year-old after selling Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon in the transfer window.

Equally, Man United also arguably needed a long-term central defensive option, with Lisandro Martinez seeing his contract expire next summer and Harry Maguire not getting any younger.

“There's no hiding the fact that we feel like we should have won today. A little bit on us, to be fair, not seeing out the game well enough," Carrick said after dropping points late on at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The visitors arguably didn't show enough maturity to see out the game and were ultimately on the receiving end of a wonder strike.

Sesko, meanwhile, claimed that his side were "unlucky" not to come away with three points, despite Everton continuing to threaten Lammens goal.

"I would just say we were a little bit, well a lot, unlucky," the striker admitted. "It is just the games that happen sometimes and it is important how you face that, what you learn from it and try to get better the next match."

United now host Sabah in the Champions League on Thursday night before facing Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday, two games where they will hope to bounce back.
