Bayern Munich issue furious statement over what happened to Manuel Neuer during Schalke draw

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has released an angry statement after Manuel Neuer was subjected to abuse from the home crowd during their 0-0 draw with Schalke.

Vincent Kompany's side dropped points at the Veltins-Arena despite having 15 shots on goal and having 83 per cent possession.

They started without Harry Kane, who was named on the bench before being brought on at half-time for left-back Nathaniel Brown.

The England captain's introduction didn't have the desired effect, however, along with the introductions of Michael Olise and Jamal Musiala early in the second half.

It was certainly a notable evening for Neuer, who has continued as Bayern's number one this season after signing a new one-year contract.

The 40-year-old signed for Bayern from Schalke back in 2011. He had spent his entire career at Schalke, having joined the club at the age of five and risen through their academy ranks.

There was plenty of ill-feeling around the transfer at the time, with Schalke firmly established in the Bundesliga at the time and having secured Europa League qualification for 2011/12 by winning the DFB-Pokal. They would finish in the Champions League qualification places in the next season.

The two clubs haven't faced each other often over recent years, with Schalke having spent four of the past five seasons in the 2. Bundesliga.

But after winning the second-tier title last season, they are back in the top flight - and made sure to remind Neuer that the ill-feeling towards him still remains.

The German goalkeeper was relentlessly booed and whistled by fans every time he touched the ball at the Veltins-Arena, and he was even subjected to some X-rated chants from the home crowd.

If the chants were meant to disrupt Neuer, it certainly didn't affect his game, and the 40-year-old gave a light-hearted response when asked about them post-match.

"These are compliments," he stated. "This is love - that is how I put it.

"It was nice to come back. I spent 20 years here, and I learned everything here. My family lives here. I really enjoyed it."

But Bayern's sporting director Eberl took on a much different tone in addressing the crowd reaction towards Neuer.

"Schalke fans, 95 per cent, chapeau for what they have done," Eberl stated. "The other ... they should be proud that they produced such a great guy in their youth academy, who then made the breakthrough into world football, became the best goalkeeper in the world and a world champion.

"Then such expletives are not acceptable. You can boo because you are against Bayern, but there is no need for those expressions."

The reaction towards Neuer came as a surprise to some quarters of the German media, but Neuer's historic ties to Schalke ultimately led to some of the crowd's disdain directed at him.

The goalkeeper watched Schalke matches from the North Stand - where the club's ultras are based - before he became a member of the first team.

According to German outlet BILD, there was a clash between Bayern's ultras and Schalke fans in a parking lot before the match got underway.
