Aaron Ramsdale's career hits new low as fans point to moment that changed everything

Aaron Ramsdale was seen as an integral part of Arsenal's transfer business in the summer of 2021 as Mikel Arteta was building a squad to challenge for a Premier League title.

After two seasons as the first-choice keeper at the Gunners, Ramsdale was demoted after Arteta made the decision to acquire David Raya, with the Spaniard becoming his number one.

Of course, the transfer worked out and Raya was pivotal in their Premier League title-winning campaign in 2026.

Ramsdale, meanwhile, would not sit idle on the Arsenal bench as he searched for first-team football. He moved to Southampton in 2024 but the decision has not worked out. In fact, his career has hit a new low.

As mentioned above, the Saints signed the England international for £25 million in the summer of 2024 upon their promotion to the Premier League.

Ramsdale would suffer a relegation to the Championship with Southampton that campaign before going out on loan the next season to Newcastle United, but the Magpies would not make him a permanent fixture of their squad.

This has seen the 28-year-old return to the Saints for this campaign but Tonda Eckert, the Southampton manager, recently revealed to BBC Radio Solent that Ramsdale is effectively their fourth-choice goalkeeper.

"The reality is that Rambo's story at the football club has started before I came in. We've had honest conversations from the very first day of pre-season to the last day of the transfer window, and he's still a part of the group," he said.

"The expectations for him are clear: to support the team in the best way, and he's been very professional in doing that so far. Let's see what happens. Aaron also became a father for the second time a couple of days ago; my expectation is that he is a Southampton player."

There is still time for the 30-year-old to exit the club with the Saudi Arabian transfer window set to slam shut on Sunday; otherwise, he will have to sit behind Daniel Peretz, George Long and Jamie Jones.

Aaron Ramsdale’s opinion on being second-choice goalkeeper at Arsenal

The idea was floated online that Ramsdale would not be in this position if he remained at Arsenal as their second-choice keeper, and had he done so, he would be sitting with a Premier League winners medal with the potential for more as Arteta’s squad looks imperious this campaign.

Several fans believe his decision to leave the Gunners for a team expected to battle relegation was an ill-advised move, with many identifying it as the turning point in a career that had been on a steady upward trajectory until then.

However, Ramsdale made his feelings about this eventuality very clear in an interview with BBC One's Football Focus following his departure from the Gunners.

Hel said: “If I was sitting on the bench, it [winning a trophy] wouldn’t have meant that much to me. I just wanted to play football. As a kid I wanted to play football to play, not to just sit on a bench.

"Getting out and playing was my aim so I'm lucky I found myself here at Southampton."
