Hull's 0-0 draw with Aston Villa creates English football history seen for first time in 138 years

A unique piece of English top-flight football history was made following the conclusion of Hull's 0-0 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Villans registered their first point of the campaign at the MKM Stadium, though managed only one shot on target despite dominating possession against the Tigers.

For Hull, it was their seventh point in three Premier League matches under Sergej Jakirovic, with pre-season predictions of an early relegation for the Tigers quickly being confounded.

It was the second 0-0 draw of the day after Nottingham Forest versus Tottenham ended scoreless and, as a result, created a remarkable English football statistic.

Both Villa and Spurs have failed to score in any of their opening three Premier League matches this season, with Villa losing 4-0 to Brighton before a 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal on Monday.

Spurs, meanwhile, were also beaten 3-0 by Brentford on the opening weekend, before they were beaten 2-0 at home to Newcastle.

Along with fellow scoreless side Coventry, it means that, as per OptaJoe, this is the first season in the history of the English top-flight - since it started in 1888 - where three different teams have failed to find the net in their opening three matches of the season.

What has happened to Villa, Spurs and Coventry?

Frank Lampard's Sky Blues were handed tough assignments upon their return to the top division for the first time in 25 years, with away fixtures against Manchester City - who they lost 1-0 to on Saturday - and Arsenal.

A home fixture sandwiched inbetween those fixtures against Hull would have been targeted as Coventry's first win back in the Premier League, but they lost 1-0 thanks to Liam Millar's late second half goal.

Villa have had to reshape much of their squad following a host of summer exits, though manager Unai Emery has largely stuck with the players he had at his disposal last season so far as he integrates his 10 new arrivals.

Out of those new signings, only Zion Suzuki and Nicolas Jackson started against Hull, though Alejandro Garnacho, Alysson, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Matteo Ruggeri all came off the bench. Ibrahim Mbaye was an unused substitute, while Joao Gomes is suspended and Johan Manzambi is still recovering from injury.

For Spurs, a summer transfer spend of around £400 million was sanctioned during the summer transfer window but that has not yielded results just yet.

Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi told reporters he was 'happy with the spirit of the team' following their 0-0 draw against Forest at the City Ground, but stressed there are several areas to improve.

"I think we played well but in the last third we have to improve," he said. "We have to take the better decisions. We have to keep more calm when we are very close to doing something important in the last third.

"I remember the chance when Marmoush shot at goal, the way we had Robertson overlapping. If we take the right decision and we play with Robertson then on the second post there is Kudus to score like this.

"Or how many crosses went over the second post? From Mathys Tel, two times. Savio, one time. Savio I think it's the last decision. The ball from Pedro Porro on Mateus Fernandes, when he played with Kudus, and then for the header of Solanke, Mateus was completely alone to go forward and score."
