Gary Neville issues apology live on Sky Sports as Arsenal goal disallowed

Gary Neville was forced to issue an apology live on air with Sky Sports after jumping the gun with his opinion on Arsenal's disallowed goal against Chelsea.

Morgan Rogers put Chelsea 1-0 up early on at the Emirates Stadium before the Premier League champions hit back through Kai Havertz, who levelled against his former club.

Before that, Riccardo Calafiori had the ball in the net for the hosts but the goal was chalked off after a VAR review ruled that Ezri Konsa was in an offside position before the ball was in the back of the net.

Immediately, Neville weighed in with his opinion and said, "I disagree with it".

He added: "There's no doubt he's in an offside position but for me Emi Martinez has a clear chance to save it. I don't think he's interfering with him. If he did [get a touch on it] that would bring him into play."

Neville wanted to look at a different angle of the offside call in question but very quickly it became apparent that Konza had touched the ball and was clearly offside.

The former Manchester United captain realised his error and proceeded to apologise to the VAR and the Pro Ref governing body.

Neville said: ""Oh, he touches it. Correction. Apologies to VAR and the PGMOL."

Lead commentator Peter Drury had to correct Neville, informing him that PGMOL have changed their name to Pro Ref - with the pundit replying, "Absolutely. Pro Ref is it? Oh right, okay. Excellent."

Fans fumed at Neville for his co-commentary and how he got the incident so wrong.

One fan on X wrote: "Someone please explain to Gary Neville how offside works because he’s making himself sound unbelievably stupid."

A second said: "Astonishingly terrible piece of commentary there from Neville there on the offside goal."

A third added: "Gary Neville is talking drivel, how does he not understand the offside rule?"

A fourth vented: "What is Gary Neville talking about? Konsa kicks the ball while offside."
