Jamie Vardy makes stunning return to English football with club whose fans called his wife 'a grass'

Jamie Vardy has completed a shock move to Championship side Burnley, whose fans taunted him about his wife when playing against them.

After leaving Leicester following his 200th goal for the club, Vardy embarked on a new chapter in Italy with Cremonese in Serie A.

The former England international scored seven goals in all competitions and won the Serie A Player of the Month award in November.

However, he left the club upon the expiry of his one-year contract at the end of the season following Cremonese's relegation to the second tier. After rumours swirled about Vardy's next destination, Burnley confirmed Vardy's arrival on Sunday afternoon.

The Clarets announced on X that the 39-year-old had penned a contract until the end of the season.

On the club's official website, Vardy said he is "really happy" to sign for Burnley and described the club as one which has "a proper footballing history and passionate fans who deserve a team that represents them and their town".

Vardy scored six times in 14 Premier League games against Burnley and their supporters mocked him and his wife Rebekah in a 2019 meeting.

Vardy was on the receiving end of chants of "your wife is a grass" - referencing Coleen Rooney accusing his other half of leaking stories about her to the media.

Burnley fans also chanted, "Rooney, Rooney!" after the explosive Instagram post and media storm.

Vardy popped up with an equaliser in the 45th minute and responded by cupping his ears to the travelling supporters.

He also blew a kiss to his wife in the stands having been given a few extra days off by then-manager Brendan Rodgers.

Burnley were sent back down to the Championship last season but have had a disastrous start to life under Nicky Hayen in the second tier, sitting at the bottom of the table after five games.

They have taken just two points and were beaten at home by Bristol City on Saturday.

Hayen will be hoping that Vardy's experience can help move Burnley up the table. Commenting on the signing, the Belgian coach said: "We are delighted to welcome Jamie to Burnley FC. His experience and leadership will be invaluable to our squad, and we believe he can make a significant impact on our campaign. Jamie has a proven track record, and we are looking forward to seeing him in a Claret shirt."

The new contract means Vardy will play into his 40s, following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo.

But retirement is in sight for Vardy, who has a number of other business ventures and admitted he will call time on his career to spend quality time with his family the minute he feels that his legs are slowing down.

"The main thing for me is, you sacrifice so much during a football career on things you miss out," he told SPORTbible.

"And I think when it comes to, I'm finished with football side of things, I want to make sure that I can spend some quality time with my wife and kids. It's something that I've missed - big chunks of them growing up at different ages and things like that. So I don't want to be missing anymore.

“The kids, they love coming to watch me play football, and it's a real enjoyment for them.

“While my legs are still saying they're fine, I'll carry on, but there will come a time when the legs say ‘this ain't happening anymore’ and that's when I definitely need to call it quits.”
