Jamie Vardy's transfer record finally broken after 14 years as eye-watering bid accepted

Boreham Wood winger Abdul Abdulmalik is set to become the most expensive player in the history of non-league football, surpassing Jamie Vardy's 14-year record.

Vardy made history in 2012 when he left National League (then Conference) side Fleetwood Town to join Leicester City in a £1 million deal.

Fleetwood held what they described as a 'significant' sell-on clause as part of the deal, but they never received another penny as Vardy spent 13 years at Leicester before leaving on a free transfer in 2025.

The figures stood unchallenged for a number of years, but with big transfer fees starting to become the norm among EFL clubs, that effect has started to trickle down into the National League.

AFC Fylde sold young striker Danny Ormerod - the son of former Blackpool striker Brett - for a fee of around £600,000 to League One side Peterborough United earlier this week.

The saga surrounding Boreham Wood winger Abdulmalik, 23, has been rumbling on for much of the summer transfer window.

Luke Garrard's side, who reached the National League play-off final last season before losing on penalties to Rochdale, rejected three bids worth seven figures from Swedish side Djurgardens for the winger.

Abdulmalik has been one of the hottest properties in non-league football this year, having scored 15 goals and provided nine assists in the National League season.

The former Millwall academy graduate issued what was effectively a public transfer request via his Instagram account on Wednesday.

He wrote: "This is my chance to push myself as a footballer, elevate my game and most importantly fulfil my promise to the ones around me.

"Opportunities like this are rare, especially in the National League where some of the hardest working talent is overlooked ... there is no guarantee that the same chances come knocking twice."

Abdulmalik bid accepted by Boreham Wood

Now, Boreham Wood have accepted a fee 'in excess' of £1.5 million to sell Abdulmalik to Djurgardens, according to BBC Sport.

The exact figure has yet to be revealed, but The Wood had rejected a third bid of £1.5 million for the winger.

He played his last game for the National League club against FC Halifax on August 15, scoring and providing an assist in a 3-1 game.

Abdulmalik has not been involved in the previous two matches, including Boreham Wood's 2-1 win over Boston United on Saturday.

His soon-to-be former side currently sit in second place in the fifth tier of English football after three games played, with three wins and a draw to their name. Sutton United, who have a 100 per cent record, sit above them.
