Jamie Vardy was banned from making his Burnley debut because of a little-known rule.

Vardy's shock move to the Clarets was confirmed on Sunday as he makes a return to English football following a year playing in Italy with Cremonese.

The Leicester City legend has bagged a one-year contract with Burnley, whose fans infamously taunted him about his wife's case with Coleen Rooney many years back.

Vardy signed a day after Burnley were beaten 2-1 by Bristol City and many expected him to feature in the clash with Wrexham on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old was present at the Racecourse Ground but was not included in the matchday squad.

That's because Vardy was actually suspended for the fixture. The former England international's ban isn't related to his previous spell in English football, but because he accumulated five yellows in Serie A with Cremonese.

The suspension carries over, meaning Vardy had to watch the game against Wrexham from the stands.

However, the delay will not last for long as he will be available for selection on Saturday when Burnley take on Swansea away from home.

In his signing announcement, Vardy stated he is "really happy" to sign for Burnley and described the club as one which has "a proper footballing history and passionate fans who deserve a team that represents them and their town".

Vardy scored seven times in 29 games in Serie A but could not stop Cremonese from being relegated.

He picked up his final yellow card on the final day of the season in May as Cremonese were thrashed 4-1 by Cesc Fabregas's Como, who qualified for the Champions League for the first time.

Zeki Amdouni put Burnley 1-0 away up at Wrexham in what could be a huge victory for Nicky Hayen's side.

At the time of writing, Burnley are winless in the Championship and were left at the bottom of the table following the latest loss at the weekend.

They will hope that the arrival of Vardy, who scored 18 goals in his last spell in the English second tier, will propel them up the table.

He was wearing his Burnley tracksuit on Tuesday night and walked onto the pitch alongside Ashley Barnes.

Speaking on Sky Sports, former Arsenal star Paul Merson weighed in on the savvy signing.

"I think it's a good signing in my opinion," he said.

"He's always looked after himself. He's lively and he scores goals. I think this could kickstart Burnley. I think it's a really, really good signing for Burnley and he will score goals."
