Gary Neville calls Man United star 'stupid' for decision made in last-gasp Everton draw

Gary Neville has slammed a Manchester United for a "stupid" decision he made in the build-up to the late leveller conceded against Everton on Sunday afternoon.

United drew 2-2 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles scoring a stunning last-minute equaliser on his Everton debut.

Bryan Mbeumo had put the visitors ahead, before Tyrique George made it 1-1.

Benjamin Sesko came off the bench to open his account for the new season but for the third consecutive game, United conceded two goals as Maitland-Niles snatched a point for the Toffees.

But while the goal was a superb strike, Neville had issues with what happened in the build-up and pinned a portion of the blame on Patrick Dorgu, who came on as a second half substitute.

Neville spotted how Dorgu sprinted out of position in an isolated press and his decision to do opened up space for Everton to exploit on the left flank.

Speaking on the Gary Neville podcast on Sky Sports' YouTube channel, the former Manchester United captain said: "There may be some people that lazily say, ‘They were two spectacular goals’. That last one was a really bad one because they’re on that far side.

“Dorgu for some reason, chases out and presses - isolated press. [Andrey] Santos then doesn’t go over behind him and stays back.

“And it just gets played past Dorgu. It just strikes me as massive miscommunication.

“Dalot ends up going off and Yoro comes on at right-back. He’s narrow and tucked in deep, as are the other back four players.

“And Mazraoui is at left back, so United have had to change their back four again during the match.

“Yoro coming on right-back, for me, highlights the problem.

“Forget the goal because that is a special strike but there is a lot that happens before that ball goes in the back of Manchester United’s net.

“You’ve got to push up and make sure you’ve not got players sprinting off and doing stupid things.

“Dorgu sprints off and the ball goes past him, Everton drift down the left so easily.

“Santos doesn’t get across and when Santos doesn’t get across, Yoro is deep and narrow almost playing like a third or fourth centre-back waiting for the ball to go in the box.

“They could have stopped it at source. I was screaming as it happened. You know full well you’re going to get the ball pumped into your box or a team being desperate.

“You have to make sure you’re organised and United weren’t in that last couple of minutes.”

Gary Neville highlights concern in Michael Carrick's management

Dorgu was one of five substitutes used by Michael Carrick, with both full-backs replaced as Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot both came off.

Neville is worried about changes in the backline at United and believes Carrick ought to stop the tinkering in-game.

“You can’t be changing your back four," he stated.

"If you’ve got [Piero] Hincapie to come on from [Riccardo] Calafiori maybe you can but Manchester United have got a back four of Shaw, Dalot, Maguire and Lisandro Martinez and they’ve not got much behind that.

“You can’t really change your back four. Maybe Michael Carrick will tell us, maybe they’re injured or he thought they could get away with it in the last five or 10 minutes and save them for midweek but it’s not ideal.

“That is a concern.”
