Marc Guehi had even reportedly recorded his Crystal Palace ‘farewell video’ before his proposed Liverpool move collapsed.
Guehi, 25, has had an eventful couple of days. On Sunday, the England international captained Crystal Palace to an emphatic 3-0 away win against Aston Villa and scored an impressive right-footed long-range strike in what many thought was his final act as an Eagles player.
By Monday, the 25-year-old appeared to be close to joining Liverpool, with The Athletic reporting that a £35m deal was agreed and that personal terms were in place ahead of a proposed medical.
As reported by BBC Sport, Palace reportedly refused to sanction the transfer due to their failure to secure a replacement after target Igor Julio decided to join West Ham United.

This came after Palace head coach Oliver Glasner stressed that “we need to keep Marc to play a successful season” during a press conference on Sunday.
Glasner added: “I know if we don’t sell Marc, he will accept it. He loves the club and team, he feels the appreciation, and we feel the same from his side. That’s why I have to say we need to keep him.”
Unlike Yoane Wissa and Alexander Isak, Guehi continued to train and play for Palace despite the speculation.

However, the club went as far as to put together a ‘farewell video’ which was ‘leaked’ on social media – although this is unverified.
The supposed farewell video – see below - opened with several clips from Palace’s FA Cup final victory against Manchester City back in May. It then continued to show an array of highlights, including goals, tackles and interviews from his time at the club.
But Guehi, who is contracted to Palace until June 2026, will remain in south London until January at least.

The England centre-back will return to Premier League action on September 13 when Glasner’s side take on Sunderland at Selhurst Park.
Before then, he will likely feature in England’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.
Marc Guehi alternatives Liverpool can still sign
Now that Guehi’s proposed move is off, this leaves Arne Slot’s side short in central defence.

Aside from first-choice Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, Slot now has just Joe Gomez and 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni as back-up while Rhys Williams, who spent last season on loan at Morecambe, is out injured.
So, could the Reds dip into the free agent market?
According to the Liverpool Echo, several options are available, although there is no evidence to suggest Liverpool are interested in said players.
Former Chelsea, Everton and West Ham centre-back Kurt Zouma is currently without a club, having left Saudi side Al-Orobah upon the expiration of his contract earlier this summer.

Meanwhile, ex-Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is also a free agent after he was released by the Gunners in June.
