Mason Greenwood hit with UEFA ban as former Arsenal star also given huge suspension and fine

Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi have both been punished by UEFA for "offensive gestures" in Fenerbahce's fiery Champions League win over Lyon.

Fenerbahce beat Lyon 3-2 on aggregate in the play-off to qualify for the competition's league phase.

The Turkish giants secured passage with a 2-1 away victory at the Groupama Stadium thanks to goals from Vedat Muriqi and Archie Brown in the first half.

But there was huge controversy at the final whistle as all hell broke loose.

Being a former Marseille player, Guendouzi was jeered throughout the game and his emotions got the better of him as he appeared to taunt the supporters.

He was seen shouting "Allez l'OM" to the camera as he showed his allegiance to Marseille and followed up by flipping off the fans.

Opposition players confronted the French midfielder and a wild melee ensued in the tunnel involving both sets of teams.

What punishment has been handed to Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi by UEFA?

Greenwood, who joined Fenerbahce from Marseille this summer, was also present and subject to the UEFA investigation.

The former Manchester United forward was given a one-match suspended ban which is "subject to a probationary period of one year", on top of a £26,000 fine, for "violating the basic rules of decent conduct".

Guendouzi, meanwhile, received a punishment that was much more extreme as he was accused of "insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators and for violating the basic rules of decent conduct".

The former Arsenal man was handed a four-game ban, two of which are suspended for the one year probationary period. His fine amounted to £43,000 and he will be unavailable for Fenerbahce's Champions League matches against Roma and Aston Villa.

Guendouzi had said he was "disrespected" by Lyon fans and received insults towards his mother and family as he addressed his antics.

"You know, when you've got 60,000 people insulting your family, your mum, your children, even before the match - and nobody from the refereeing team tells the stadium to be quiet," Guendouzi said.

"Because I know that in France, when this sort of thing happens, there comes a point where they'll speak to the supporters and the match might be stopped. For 90 minutes - even longer if you count the warm-up - they were insulting my family.

“That really gets to you. If you want to banter, then it goes both ways. They insulted my mum and my family; to me, that was disrespectful."

In response to the verdict, Fenerbahce appeared to hint at appealing the punishments imposed.

A statement from the club said: "Our club is evaluating the decisions and reasoning behind them issued by Uefa through our legal departments, and will pursue the necessary arbitration and appeal processes to the Uefa appeals committee against the penalties imposed."

Both clubs were fined £42,000 for “violating the general and basic rules of conduct” but it was Lyon's goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira who received the most severe sanction.

He was given a five-game ban for what UEFA considered to be "serious assault". Like the previous punishments, two of those matches have been suspended.
