UEFA launch Mason Greenwood investigation as Fenerbahce release statement

UEFA has opened an investigation into Mason Greenwood's behaviour during Fenerbahce's Champions League win over Lyon.

Back in August, Turkish giants Fenerbahce secured a vital win over Lyon in France, picking up a 2-1 victory at the Groupama Stadium to secure a spot in this season's Champions League with an aggregate score of 3-2.

While the match itself was fiery, the real drama kicked off after the final whistle as Fenerbahce's Matteo Guendouzi, who previously played for Lyon's fierce rivals Marseille, began riling up the French fans.

As he slowly walked off, the midfielder's actions sparked chaos on the pitch and tunnel, with somebody in what appeared to be a Lyon tracksuit attempting to throw a flying kick at Guendouzi.

Alongside Guendouzi at the centre of the ugly scenes was former Manchester United player Greenwood, who joined the Turkish club from Marseille on a four-year contract this summer.

And now, Fenerbahce have released a club statement confirming that UEFA has officially launched an investigation into Guendouzi and Greenwood's behaviour during the post-match drama.

"Following the UEFA Champions League Play-Off Round second leg match, UEFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against our players Mattéo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood, as well as against our club," the statement confirmed.

"Our club will present the necessary defences before the relevant UEFA bodies in order to protect the rights and interests of our players and Fenerbahce during this process.

"The necessary information, documents, and defences regarding the process will be submitted to UEFA, and developments are being closely monitored by our Club. We inform the public accordingly."

Although it's not known exactly what punishment either player or Fenerbahce could face, it is likely to come in the form of match bans for the players, as well as fines, with a more severe fine or even away-supporter ticket bans possible for the club.

Matteo Guendouzi addresses Champions League fights involving Mason Greenwood

Post-match, Guendouzi spoke out about the controversial scenes, claiming that he had been 'disrespected' by home supporters, prompting his behaviour.

He said: "You know, when you've got 60,000 people insulting your family, your mum, your children, even before the match - and nobody from the refereeing team tells the stadium to be quiet.

"Because I know that in France, when this sort of thing happens, there comes a point where they'll speak to the supporters and the match might be stopped. For 90 minutes - even longer if you count the warm-up - they were insulting my family.

“That really gets to you. If you want to banter, then it goes both ways. They insulted my mum and my family; to me, that was disrespectful."

Head coach also defended both Guendouzi and Greenwood, saying: “As a team we all stood together to support Guendouzi. Support was provided. That is what teamwork is all about.”

Fenerbahce begin their Champions League campaign with a trip to Villa Park to face Unai Emery's side on September 14.
