Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could play together for the first time after receiving special invite

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could be teammates for the first time ever after receiving invites to a former teammate's farewell game.

Messi and Ronaldo both played with Carlos Tevez, who will have a special match at the end of the year to celebrate his career.

According to Marcelo Palacios of TyC Sports, Tevez reached out to his former teammate Juan Roman Riquelme - who is now the president of Boca Juniors.

Tevez had three spells with Boca and is set to finally have his tribute game at the iconic La Bombanera stadium in December, five years after retiring from football.

Riquelme has given the sign-off and officials are now working on a date that works in the final month of the year and does not clash with Boca's schedule.

Former Argentina international Tevez played for a whole host of top clubs in his glittering career and rubbed shoulders with some of the very best in the business.

It's claimed that around 60 "star players" are expected to attend the game, with greats Messi and Ronaldo the most sought-after players.

Tevez played with Messi for Argentina and shared a dressing room with Tevez for three seasons at Manchester United, departing in the same summer.

The pair, who have 13 Ballon d'Ors between them, are still playing at Inter Miami and Al Nassr respectively.

However, Tevez has made secret of his desire to get the two big guns to play in his testimonial. In fact, when asked if they would be on opposite sides, Tevez, speaking on streaming platform Olga, said: "We'll get them together."

The 41-year-old said he has remained in touch with both greats on WhatsApp and when asked about persuading Ronaldo, he said: "I'll go get him myself."

With a career spanning more than 20 years, Tevez is not short of legendary former colleagues to pick from and could be about to put together one of the most stacked games in history.

He previously spoke about wanting both Edwin Van der Sar and Gianluigi Buffon to be the goalkeepers, as well as having his sights set on Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci for central defence.

Andrea Pirlo, Paul Scholes, Riquelme and Wayne Rooney will be also be getting the call-up.

"(Edwin) Van der Sar on one side and (Gianluigi) Buffon on the other,” Tevez stated.

"At centre back, we’ll probably have Rio Ferdinand, (Nemanja) Vidic… we’ll bring in (Giorgio) Chiellini, (Leonardo) Bonucci. Patrice Evra, my brother, he has to be there. Midfielders… (Andrea) Pirlo, Paul Scholes, Roman (Riquelme) will definitely be there. Rooney."

It has been reported that Tevez wishes to have a team featuring his friends from football and the neighbourhood, with the opposition made up of players who played with in his career.

Tevez retired in 2022 and went on to manage Rosario Central, Independiente and Talleres in his native Argentina.
