A second club have entered the race to sign a Premier League player – although Wrexham’s financial position could help them get the deal over the line.
Wrexham, co-owned by North American actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, will compete in English football’s second-tier – the Championship – next season, having secured a third consecutive promotion, this time from League One in April.
The club have already seen ex-Premier League stars such as James McClean, Steven Fletcher and Jay Rodriguez play for the North Wales outfit, but they could be set to welcome another top-flight player, who has represented England.

Earlier this month, the club announced the departure of Fletcher, Mark Howard, Josh Adam, Jordan Davies, Harry Dean, Brad Foster, Liam Hall, and Sam Dalby in their end-of-season retained list.
As a result, a huge chunk of wages has been cut, which could be used to tempt players to sign for the club this summer.
Premier League players, including Jamie Vardy and Tom Cairney, have been linked with potential transfers, but it is another top professional who could be set to join the Red Dragons.

Former England international Aaron Cresswell, whose West Ham United contract is set to expire at the end of June, is being targeted by Wrexham.
The Liverpool-born full-back made 369 appearances for the Hammers during 11 years at the club and was part of the 2023 Conference League-winning squad.
According to Capology, the left-back's contract with West Ham saw him earn £50,000 per week, meaning he would likely have to take a fairly significant financial blow if he decides to join the North Wales club.
However, Wrexham would likely hand Cresswell more minutes, which could work to their advantage during negotiations.

But Wrexham could be in for some competition as Leeds, who will play in the Premier League next term, have also reportedly shown interest in the 35-year-old.
Cresswell played his final game for the Hammers during West Ham’s 3-1 win away at Ipswich Town on Sunday.

Like several Wrexham players, Cresswell owes a lot to the EFL as he came through the ranks at Tranmere Rovers before moving to Ipswich Town, then to West Ham.

His former manager, Sam Allardyce, even attributed Cresswell’s “progress” down to his experience in the EFL.
“He never gives up and his energy and commitment is second to none,” Allardyce said about Cresswell in 2014.
“Aaron’s progress through the Football League has helped him become the player he is. His game record is absolutely phenomenal as he’s played about 40 odd games a season for three years. So that has helped him no end.”
