Manchester United lose historic record with Carabao Cup exit and fans blame one player

Manchester United are out of the Carabao Cup and they've lost one of the club's most famous records in the procesc.

For the second year in a row, Manchester United have crashed out of the Carabao Cup in their first match after losing 3-2 to Brighton at Old Trafford.

In doing so, United have lost one of the club's most historic record dating back all the way to 2013 following the departure of legendary manager Ferguson.

Manchester United lose historic two-goal record with Carabao Cup exit

United quickly took the lead in the Carabao Cup clash with Brighton on Wednesday night as youngster Shea Lacey opened the scoring with a goal in the eighth minute.

Just two minutes later it looked like the home side may have already secured the win as Mason Mount found a second goal in the 10th minute, giving United a comfortable lead.

Seconds before half-time, Brighton found their first goal, through young forwards Charalampos Kostoulas, while a stellar second half performance saw the Seagulls snatch a lead with goals from star players Pascal Gross and Maxime De Cuyper.

The result means that United have now lost their famous record of never losing a match at Old Trafford after holding a two-goal lead, doing so for the first time in over 50 years, since a 3-2 loss to Spurs in September 1976.

Since Ferguson's retirement in 2013, United had played 145 matches in which they took a two-goal lead, and, amazingly, they won 143 of them while drawing two.

But now, having surrendered their lead to Brighton and crashing out of the Carabao Cup, the streak is over and the pressure is on United having also lost to fierce rivals Manchester City in a controversial home clash last weekend.

Man United fans blame one player for historic Carabao Cup loss

Although several players had a poor game at Old Trafford, there is clearly one performance that stood out to United fans, who took to social media to make their feelings known.

Posting on X, one fan brutally wrote: "Supported United 50 years never seen a worse full back than Mazraoui."

Another added: "What is Mazaroui doing on the pitch? The guy is weak and tired."

While one claimed: "Heaven and Mazraoui might be the worst combination this club has ever had."

In their next fixture United travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham in the Premier League in their last match ahead of the international break.
