A surprising Premier League side has been tipped to sign Jamie Vardy after his departure from Leicester City was confirmed.

Ever since he announced that he would be leaving Leicester City after 13 years of service, rumours about Vardy's future have been rampant.

The Premier League legend has been linked with clubs across the EFL, with the likes of Wrexham, Leeds United and even several Scottish Premiership clubs.

But now, a shock new club may emerge in the race to sign the Englishman after one journalist made a compelling argument for why his team should look to bring him in.

After narrowly securing a spot in the Champions League next season thanks to their goal difference total, Newcastle United journalist Dan Murphy from Geordie Boot Boys believes Vardy could be a shrewd addition to the Magpies' squad.

Although he is now 38 years old, Vardy's goal in his final match for Leicester City against Ipswich Town shows that he is still more than capable of finding the back of the net.

And given the fact that he will be available as a free agent in the summer, Murphy has argued that he would be the perfect squad signing for Newcastle.

The Foxes striker scored nine Premier League goals this season, which makes up 27.8% of his team's goals for the whole campaign.

If he were able to keep up the same conversation rate at St James' Park, the Englishman would score an impressive 18 goals for Newcastle United.

Of course, Vardy would have almost no chance of taking Newcastle star Alexander Isak out of the starting lineup, but Murphy clams that he would be a better back up option than both Will Osula and Callum Wilson.

Add to this the fact that Newcastle will likely need to be smart with their spending in the summer to ensure they stay within Profit and Sustainability rules, Vardy on a free transfer could be a smart deal.

Doing so would allow Eddie Howe to focus on the more pressing issues within his squad, with Newcastle fans demanding a new goalkeeper, centre-back, winger and midfielder over the summer.
