The Incredible Underdog Story Of Malian Minnows Binga FC

The Incredible Underdog Story Of Malian Minnows Binga FC

Binga FC, who play in the Malian second tier, have travelled over 1,300 km on two occasions for cup games.

You're forgiven for being aware of Malian side Binga FC but they really need to be on your radar.

The minnows play in the second tier in Mali and have little money or resources to depend upon.

But they made history in winning the Mali Cup in May and then qualified for the CAF Confederations Cup, where they play against teams from across Africa.

So far they've played away from home in Liberia and Burkina Faso. Incredibly, because they cannot afford to put the squad on a flight, the team travel via minibus and both journeys totalled more than 1,300km.

We've all done long away trips in our time but nothing like this.

Despite this, though, Binga beat both MC Breweries and ASFA-Yennenga on their own patch.

After losing the first leg at home to Yennenga they won 1-0 away at the weekend and progressed from the second preliminary round after emerging victorious penalties (7-6) in Burkina Faso.

On Twitter Ben Arafa produced a brilliant thread in Arabic detailing the remarkable achievements of this team. The pictures give a valuable insight into the lack of finances available to club, but it doesn't stop them in their tracks.

Binga will now face a tougher task in their next encounter as they will play one of the teams eliminated from the Champions League.

Their unique story should hopefully bring about more interest and investment into Malian football in the near future.
