Now, he has been given a fresh opportunity to reignite his career at the Bernabeu after the club appointed Jose Mourinho as their manager, after Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa struggled at the helm of Los Blancos last season.

Several football fans and pundits have been critical of Alexander-Arnold’s defensive qualities over the past few seasons, leading to many believing he may struggle under Mourinho this campaign, especially following the addition of Denzel Dumfries to the club.

However, it now appears the Portuguese manager has accessed the ability of the England international and has a plan to get the best out of the 27-year-old.

As reported by AS Diario, Mourinho deployed a tactical plan in their most recent friendly against Fiorentina, which utilised the two right-backs, with the Englishman in defence, while the Dutch international was operating as a winger.

The plan saw Mourinho use Alexander-Arnold as an extra midfielder when Real Madrid were in attack, with England international being described as a ‘triple threat’.

Alexander-Arnold is now viewed by Mourinho as a full-back, a set-piece specialist, and a resource for building attacks, hence the movement of him into a midfield role when in possession.

In the report from the Spanish outlet, they spoke about how the Portuguese manager provided the English international with constant instructions, showing him exactly where he wanted him to inject his surgical precision with passes that cut through lines to help the Real Madrid attack.

Alexander-Arnold had a similar role to this in his final season at Liverpool, as he helped them win the Premier League under Arne Slot, with the Dutchman using him in a similar fashion as to how Mourinho wants to deploy the 27-year-old.
