Real Madrid make huge decision on selling Trent Alexander-Arnold after Jose Mourinho snub

Real Madrid have reportedly made a decision on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future at the club after Jose Mourinho decided against starting the right-back in his first two La Liga games since his return.

Alexander-Arnold’s time in the Spanish capital has so far been one to forget, with the Liverpudlian yet to lift silverware and even struggling to maintain a spot in the starting XI.

In his first season, during which he was coached by Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa, the England international made just 21 La Liga appearances and contributed four assists, with two muscle injuries significantly disrupting his campaign. This led to his omission from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup.

And despite Trent being fit again, Real boss Mourinho appears to favour summer signing Denzel Dumfries at right-back, with the Dutchman having started both wins against Espanyol and Real Sociedad over the past week.

Trent did make a brief cameo appearance late on in the Espanyol win, although he did not feature at all against Real Sociedad as Kylian Mbappe’s hat-trick helped Los Blancos to a 4-1 win.

The right-back’s lack of game time has led to reports that he may return to the Premier League, with Newcastle United reportedly interested in the former Liverpool man.

Speaking to talkSPORT earlier this week, European football expert Andy Brassell claimed that “he’d be brilliant for Newcastle” and urged Alexander-Arnold to return to the Premier League after just over a year away.

“Other than [a return to Liverpool], I think it is really difficult, because it would be a Prem team,” he said.

“Before they went out and bought Amir Dedic, [Newcastle] were definitely looking for a right-back.

“I know they spent a lot of money on Dedic and they will have limited means. If you could loan Alexander-Arnold to Newcastle for a year, he would be brilliant there, especially with the pace they’ve got.

“Imagine the switches of play that he could engineer. Maybe that’s not an appealing move to him, to go to a rebuilding team in the Premier League.

“The reality is because of financial reasons, the Premier League is probably the most obvious place for him to go.

“If it’s not Liverpool, there’s a very limited pool.

“He’s such a brilliant player, who is massively underappreciated, and kind of treated as a problem, rather than a solution to a problem.”

However, despite the speculation, TEAMtalk reports that Real Madrid have no desire to sell Alexander-Arnold this summer, with sources suggesting Mourinho has faith in the player, who is under contract until 2031.

The report read: “Real Madrid view Alexander-Arnold’s early difficulties as part of a necessary settling-in period rather than a reason to cash in. The player himself has spoken of feeling at home in Madrid and remains committed to proving himself in the famous white shirt.”

Real Madrid return to action at home against Malaga on August 30.
