Trent Alexander-Arnold urged to make unthinkable career decision after Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid snub
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been urged to make a huge decision just two games into Jose Mourinho’s tenure as Real Madrid boss.
Alexander-Arnold’s Real Madrid future is uncertain despite joining the club last summer, as Mourinho has opted to start new right-back Denzel Dumfries in his first two La Liga fixtures in charge.
The Englishman, who controversially left Liverpool for Real ahead of last summer’s Club World Cup, was introduced with 10 minutes left in Los Blancos’ opening-round 2-1 win away at Espanyol.
Last night (August 26), the Liverpudlian was made to watch from the bench, with Mourinho deciding against putting him on as Kylian Mbappe’s hat-trick helped Los Blancos to a convincing 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad.

Whether Alexander-Arnold’s time in the Spanish capital improves remains to be seen, but his stint in Madrid has not gone as planned, with the 27-year-old registering seven assists and zero goals in 36 appearances for the La Liga giants.
And despite being under contract at Madrid until 2031, fans on social media think it’s time for the right-back to return to the Premier League as he approaches what should be the peak years of his career.
One fan said: “One of the greatest RBs in the Premier League came to Real Madrid in Spain and was benched by a mid from Serie A should tell you everything about the Premier League and the player. Trent has the chance to be the greatest ever RB in the Premier League but decided to betray his boyhood club for money.”
Another added: “Trent Alexander-Arnold was an unused substitute tonight. Someone that should have been captaining his boyhood club has turned himself into an unused substitute for another club. He will suffer.”
A third commented: “Who would’ve thought Dumfries would eventually be the one keeping Trent Alexander-Arnold out of the Real Madrid XI? 😭
“TAA is now fighting for his place after arriving at Madrid with all the hype, while Dumfries has walked in and immediately established himself as serious competition.
“And people once compared Trent to world-class Reece James.”
A fourth suggested: “Trent Alexander-Arnold destroyed his legacy and threw away a guaranteed legendary status chasing fame and money. One of the greatest RB talents of all time now reduced to a backup for Dumfries. If I were him, I’d move mountains to get my ass back to #LFC at any cost.”
While a fifth waded in: “Bring Trent back on loan. We need him. He knows the club, he knows the fans, he would fit right back in at right-back. Some fans may not like it, but it’s not like we are buying him back on a perm. Would be a good solution for this season.”
Trent backed to make shock Premier League switch
Speaking before Real’s win over Sociedad, European football expert Andy Brassell claimed a loan move to Newcastle United may reignite Alexander-Arnold’s career should he fail to return to Liverpool.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Brassell said: “I think it is really difficult, because it would be a Prem team.
“He'd be brilliant for Newcastle, who, before they went out and bought Amir Dedic, were definitely looking for a right-back.
“I know they spent a lot of money on Dedic and they will have limited means. If you could loan Alexander-Arnold to Newcastle for a year, he would be brilliant there, especially with the pace they've got.
“Imagine the switches of play that he could engineer. Maybe that's not an appealing move to him, to go to a rebuilding team in the Premier League.
“The reality is because of financial reasons, the Premier League is probably the most obvious place for him to go.
“If it's not Liverpool, there's a very limited pool.
“He's such a brilliant player, who is massively underappreciated, and kind of treated as a problem, rather than a solution to a problem.”
Real Madrid return to action at home against Malaga on August 30.
