Jose Mourinho may have forced Trent Alexander-Arnold into a major decision after deciding against playing him in Real Madrid’s 4-1 win over Sevilla.
Los Blancos ran riot at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Arda Guler, Yan Diomande and Kylian Mbappe’s brace securing Mourinho’s side all three points.
Despite the positive performance from his teammates, Alexander-Arnold will, no doubt, be alarmed by the fact that Mourinho decided to play midfielder Fede Valverde at right-back ahead of him and fellow right-back Denzel Dumfries.

Valverde put in a top performance, clearing an effort off the goal line at 2-0.

The Englishman was forced to watch on from the bench, with Mourinho choosing not to give the former Liverpool man a run-out despite his side comfortably leading for most of the night.
Mourinho’s decision to snub Alexander-Arnold may not come as a surprise, though, with the Liverpudlian making just five La Liga appearances – including three starts – this term. Dumfries also seems to be ahead of him in the pecking order.
What did Jose Mourinho say after the match?
Given his age, Alexander-Arnold, 28, may have a decision to make in the coming transfer windows if he is reduced to a bit-part role under Mourinho, with links to a return to the Premier League never far away.
Speaking after his side’s win, Mourinho admitted that it was “not easy to leave two quality right-backs on the bench” while praising Valverde.
Mourinho said: "The other day, half-jokingly and half-seriously, I said that if we had four Valverdes, they’d play in four different positions. He’s one of the most versatile players in football today.
“He can play anywhere and at a very high level. Today, he played a brilliant game. It’s not easy for a coach to leave two quality right-backs on the bench, but I thought it would be very useful to have a right-back with legs and quality to play behind Endrick.
“I don’t need to convince him of anything. He’s the captain of Real Madrid, and if he has to play as a goalkeeper, then gloves on and into the goal.”
Fans were quick to have their say on Alexander-Arnold’s downfall on social media.
One said: “You could actually say Trent Alexander-Arnold is now third-choice right-back at Real Madrid. Valverde and Dumfries are both ahead of him.”
Another added: “Honestly, has a player ever self-sabotaged their career as much as Trent? He was going to be a legend and future captain here, and he threw it away to start 3 games for Madrid and can't even make the squad for his country. You just know he regrets it every single day.”
A third claimed: “I’m genuinely starting to feel Mourinho is disrespecting Trent Alexander-Arnold. We signed one of the best attacking right-backs in world football just to watch Valverde play out of position at RB. What exactly does Trent have to do to earn Mourinho’s trust? This is becoming ridiculous.”
A fourth commented: “There has to be something else going on that we don’t know about because why is Trent getting exiled? I love a Fede at RB but it just seems strange that Trent has had very few minutes as of late.”
Alexander-Arnold is under contract at Real until 2031.
