Trent Alexander-Arnold could be about to cost Real Madrid millions after his latest setback.

On Wednesday night, Xabi Alonso's men produced a brilliant performance as they secured a La Liga victory over Athletic Club at the San Mames.

A brace from Kylian Mbappe, plus a goal by Eduardo Camavinga, sealed a comfortable 3-0 win for Los Blancos.

As a result of their victory, Madrid are now one point behind fierce rivals Barcelona, who sit top of the La Liga table with 37 points.

However, Madrid's win was marred by another injury suffered by Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was forced off and replaced by Raul Asencio with 55 minutes on the clock.

After recently returning from a hamstring problem, Alexander-Arnold started at right-back and provided the assist for Mbappe's first goal.

However, just 10 minutes into the second half, the 27-year-old former Liverpool man was taken off.

On Thursday, a Madrid statement confirmed the extent of Alexander-Arnold's injury.

It read: "After the tests carried out today on our player Trent Alexander-Arnold by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the anterior rectum of the quadriceps of the left leg."

According to the BBC, Alexander-Arnold will now be sidelined for two months.

This means that Madrid will have to pay Alexander-Arnold, who reportedly earns around £250,000 per week, around £2 million without being able to call upon his services.

However, the figure will be much less if he manages to return to the pitch sooner than expected.

Despite a tough start to life in Spain, Madrid boss Alonso remains supportive of Alexander-Arnold.

Speaking recently, the Spaniard said: "Trent is a top player, and we need him. It's his first year, and this adjustment period is normal. He's also demanding of himself, and we have to support him through this significant change."

Madrid will be back in La Liga action this weekend when they take on Celta Vigo at the Bernabeu on Sunday night.
