Trent Alexander-Arnold has been given a warning over his position at Real Madrid as 'sources' have delivered a telling verdict.

Alexander-Arnold joined Real from Liverpool during the summer transfer window.

Even though his contract was coming to an end, the Spanish giants shelled out £10 million to secure his services earlier.

The 26-year-old featured for his new side during their Club World Cup venture in the United States, which ended in the semi-finals.

Real opened their La Liga campaign against Osasuna, with Alexander-Arnold featuring from the start.

But he was substituted in the second-half and was subsequently dropped for their second league fixture against Oviedo.

Alexander-Arnold, who was left out of Thomas Tuchel's recent England squad, has struggled to adapt to Spain's top flight, having enjoyed a stellar career in the Premier League.

According to a report from the Independent, Alexander-Arnold will have to 'improve a lot to oust Dani Carvajal from the team'.

What's more, he is described by 'sources' as having started 'very timidly' in an unconvincing verdict.

Per the report, there have already been quips over whether he was signed just to keep fellow countryman Jude Bellingham company, but such jibes are undercut by the fact that Xabi Alonso likes the player and knows his class.

The Englishman returned to the starting XI for Real's game against Real Mallorca before being replaced by Carvajal for the club's match at Real Sociedad.

Asked about the battle between Alexander-Arnold and Carvajal to become Real's No.1 right-back, Alonso said: "Fortunately, we have healthy competition within the team, and they're challenged internally because there are team-mates who are ready.

"It also happens in other positions, like centre back or winger. Whoever deserves it will play; it's going to be very repetitive all year."

Alexander-Arnold has made four appearances this season and will be hoping to get more minutes when Real begin their Champions League campaign against Marseille.
