Frank Lampard signs son of former England teammate in surprise Coventry City transfer

Premier League new boys Coventry City have completed the signing of a highly-rated goalkeeper whose father is a former England international who played alongside Frank Lampard.

So far, the Sky Blues have made three signings as they prepare for their first Premier League campaign in 25 years.

French winger Loum Tchaouna, who scored three goals in 32 appearances for recently-relegated Burnley last season, has been snapped up for around £20 million after penning a five-year contract.

They have also wrapped up the signing of Switzerland centre-back Aurele Amenda from Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt in a deal worth more than £17 million.

And defensive midfielder Frank Onyeka, who was Brentford’s first signing of the Premier League era but spent the 2025-26 campaign on loan at Coventry, has also moved on a permanent deal.

Towards the end of last month, a report from The Athletic claimed goalkeeper Karl Rushworth, who also spent last season on loan at Coventry, is expected to join for an initial fee of £22.5 million.

Clearly, the Premier League newcomers are trying to add strength in depth when it comes to options between the sticks.

On Sunday, it was confirmed that Coventry had secured the signing of 18-year-old Jack Ruddy, the son of former England international John Ruddy, on a free transfer following his departure from Norwich under-18s.

Taking to social media, Jack's mum Laura announced the news by posting a picture of herself and her son on the CBS Arena pitch.

"So proud of Jack for signing with Coventry City," she wrote. "The last five years haven’t always been easy, but you’ve never stopped working hard or believing in yourself. Seeing you smiling and enjoying your football again means everything."

Frank Lampard played alongside John Ruddy on just one occasion

John Ruddy, who is currently without a club after leaving Newcastle United in June, made just one appearance for the England national team, which happened to be alongside Coventry City head coach Frank Lampard.

The experienced goalkeeper featured for the Three Lions in August 2012, when goals from Phil Jagielka and Jermain Defoe secured a 2-1 win against Italy. Ruddy replaced Jack Butland at half-time.

Back in May, a report from Football Insider claimed Frank Lampard was considering a surprise move for former Liverpool and Newcastle United midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

The 35-year-old midfielder, who is currently a free agent after leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, wants a return to the Premier League.

Coventry were said to view the 2019 Champions League winner as a solid option to help bring experience to their midfield, not to mention a voice to motivate the team when the chips are down.

Despite his age, Wijnaldum proved across the 2025-26 campaign that he can still deliver some strong performances, netting 17 goals and six assists for Al-Ettifaq in all competitions.
