Latest update on Man Utd's midfield recruitment plan has not gone down well with supporters

It is no longer 'certain' that another midfielder will arrive at Manchester United this summer, according to a new report, as they 'might' decide to focus on other positions.

United have prioritised bringing in central midfielders over the past few weeks, signing Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos from Aston Villa and Chelsea respectively.

They triggered a £35 million release clause to sign Tielemans, while Santos arrived from Chelsea in a deal worth £48million plus £2million in potential add-ons

United also agreed a deal to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson in June, but decided to opt out of the transfer following a medical and signed his Brazilian compatriot Santos instead.

It was widely expected that a third new midfielder would be snapped up ahead of a busy season that features Champions League football for the first time since the 2023-24 campaign.

But a report from The Athletic claims it is now 'not certain' that another midfielder comes in, with staff considering where to next put their resources amid interest in Newcastle's Lewis Hall.

Mason Mount, who has struggled with injury problems since arriving from Chelsea, has impressed in a deeper role for United during pre-season, but his fitness will no doubt be a concern.

Kobbie Mainoo, meanwhile, will complete the quartet alongside Tielemans and Santos, yet some United fans are worried that they will be left short given the number of games this campaign.

One fan wrote: "The club is not serious if they think they can only rely on the midfield options we currently have," and a second commented: "We don’t have a natural DM and what happens if Mount gets injured again? This isn’t what INEOS promised."

A third said: "This is madness. Relying on an injury-prone player instead of signing reinforcements, especially when we’ve got multiple competitions to compete in. We can’t compete with the big boys with this mentality."

A fourth added: "Conflicted here. When he’s fit, Mount is a top player. He was the best player on the pitch against Brighton last game of season as a CM. You just can’t count on him though."

As mentioned above, full-back Lewis Hall continues to be linked with a move to United, but a deal is said to be 'highly complicated', according to The Athletic.
