George Russell issues lengthy statement after worrying Mexico GP footage and one sentence speaks volumes

George Russell has posted a lengthy statement after emotional footage of the Mercedes driver emerged online following the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Russell crossed the line in sixth place in Mexico City on a day in which his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli won the Drivers' Championship for the first time in his career.

It was a Grand Prix which, in many ways, summed up the second half of Russell's season: he suffered from battery deployment issues at the start which cost him several positions, before receiving what was a contentious 10-second penalty for causing a collision with Isack Hadjar.

Footage posted on Mercedes' social media accounts after the Grand Prix showed team principal Toto Wolff embracing a clearly emotional Russell, who was given permission by the Silver Arrows to skip press duties - with the team covering his mandatory £5,000 fine.

George Russell speaks out after losing 2026 F1 title

When Russell won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, hearing his team radio felt like listening to a driver who finally had the best car underneath him, and genuinely felt like this year was his year to win the Drivers' Championship.

In contrast, the Russell that was heard on team radio in Mexico was one that remained perplexed by his car's energy issues at another Grand Prix start. He told engineer Marcus Dudley that he would 'shut the f--- up' instead of trying to get to the bottom of what had, once again, gone wrong. His race, by then, was effectively over as far as challenging for the top positions was concerned.

Russell has had his fair share of bad luck on top of that: he retired from the lead in Canada with a power unit failure, and had another late on in Malaysia while running third.

"Now feels like a pretty suitable moment to speak from the heart," Russell wrote on Instagram. "This season started off exactly how I had hoped but it very quickly unravelled with tough luck and poor performances.

"It's been the first proper season of my career where I've had more bad days than good. Has it been tough to deal with? Yes, very. Has it been tough to pick myself up week in, week out? Yes, very. Confusion at times? Often. All I know is that I've given it my all and 2026 was not meant to be my year.

"I want to sincerely congratulate Kimi on what has been an absolutely incredible season. You truly deserve the Championship."

What was most telling about Russell's statement though is that, despite his various power unit issues throughout 2026, he still made sure to thank everyone at Mercedes for developing a car and power unit that could consistently fight for wins once again.

"Thank you to the team for producing the best car and power unit this season; it's been inspiring to see everyone coming together over four tough years to bring Mercedes back to the top," he stated.

"Now, all I can promise is that for the rest of the season, and into the next one, I will be giving my absolute all to rediscover the performance I have been capable of producing for the majority of my career and fingers crossed a little bit of luck returns. Thanks for all the support."

George Russell's mixed 2026 season analysed

Even withstanding Russell's power unit issues, there have been plenty of times this season where Antonelli has simply been faster in qualifying and race trim.

The British driver has won three races compared to eight for his team-mate, and has only been on pole position once since race eight in Austria.

His only podium in the last six races was his victory at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where he secured pole and set the fastest lap. He was in position for third in Malaysia, though, and who knows what could have happened had the power unit issues not struck again in Mexico?

What Russell can still do is secure a consolation second place in the Drivers' Championship standings. He is in fourth place but only 11 points behind Max Verstappen - who won in Mexico - in second with four Grands Prix remaining at the time of writing. Next up is the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos, a track where Russell has fond memories; he won his first Formula 1 race there back in 2022.
