Darwin Nunez 'in talks' over shock return to Europe as four-team transfer tug-of-war begins

Darwin Nunez has been offered to four European clubs by Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, according to reports, as they desperately attempt to offload the out-of-favour Uruguayan striker.

The 27-year-old is expected to leave Al Hilal, just a year after joining the club from Liverpool in a deal worth £46.3million.

Nunez is said to earn £400,000-a-week at the Saudi Pro League club, which makes him one of the highest-paid players in world football, but his time in Riyadh has been nothing short of disastrous.

Following the arrival of Karim Benzema in January, Nunez was removed from Al Hilal's squad list for the second half of the campaign.

Saudi clubs are only allowed to register eight foreign players born before 2003 in their 25-man squads, and to many people's surprise, Nunez was cut alongside former Arsenal defender Pablo Mari.

After scoring six goals in 14 Saudi Pro League games last season, it appears Nunez will depart the Riyadh-based club in the coming weeks.

A number of teams are being linked with a move. Last month, a report from Italian outlet Tuttosport claimed former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is keen to sign the Uruguay international following his appointment at AC Milan.

A switch to MLS side Atlanta United has also been rumoured of late.

Al Hilal have yet to receive a suitable transfer fee for Nunez, according to Istanbul-based journalist Yagız Sabuncuoglu, who claims the Saudi club are now actively offering the player to other clubs.

In fact, they have asked the four big teams in the Super Lig - Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, Besiktas, and Trabzonspor - whether they want to sign Nunez on loan.

Al-Hilal officials, meanwhile, are set to fly to Turkey in the coming days to open talks.

As mentioned above, Al Hilal have made Nunez available for loan, something Barcelona - a club that have previously been linked with a move - have been made aware of, according to Sport.

No formal negotiations have taken place between Barca and the Saudi club.

Nunez has been spotted at Al Hilal’s pre-season training camp in Austria but again, the club are keen on offloading him to Europe on loan in the hope he can rebuild his reputation to secure a permanent move elsewhere.
