Dominik Szoboszlai speaks out on furious on-pitch row with Liverpool teammate Curtis Jones

Dominik Szoboszlai insists there has been no fallout from his on-pitch row with Liverpool teammate Curtis Jones last week.

Jones was clearly unhappy at full-time of the 1-0 win over Wrexham in New York last Wednesday, when he was involved in a heated exchange with Szoboszlai and Kostas Tsimikas on the pitch.

It is understood the issue stemmed from Szoboszlai's decision to hand the captain's armband to Tsimikas rather than Jones when he was withdrawn in the second-half. Liverpool won the match thanks to a deflected effort from Rio Ngumoha, but the post-match discussion was dominated by the spat, which went viral on social media.

Liverpool sources were quick to diffuse the situation, pointing out that similar disagreements happen at all clubs playing at such an elite level, while the pair have since been seen sharing jokes.

Szoboszlai has now spoken out on the incident himself and reiterated that the issue has been resolved between him and his teammate.

“It was never a debate between us three,” he told The Athletic. “We just discussed something on the pitch. Afterwards you guys (the media) made it very big. Next time we will manage to do it in the changing room. Nobody was angry at no-one. It’s all cleared up. We are cool.”

Liverpool yet to decide new vice-captain

Virgil van Dijk remains the Liverpool captain heading into the new season, but the Reds are without an official vice-captain after Andy Robertson left to join Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.

Andoni Iraola will likely make an official announcement in the coming weeks, with Szoboszlai a leading contender to be given the title. However, he is well aware that he faces serious competition for it.

He added: "No, there hasn't been any conversation [about the vice captaincy]. Obviously we have Virgil as the captain. We have Alisson. We have Joe Gomez. So there was no conversation at all. Obviously Ali is not here. Joe is injured.

"I was very proud moment to have it. And let's see. It's not my choice. It's not fixed. If you get offered the vice-captain in Liverpool FC, you're going to take it. It would be a proud moment for me. But I respect everybody."

Szoboszlai, who is the captain of the Hungary national team, isn't getting carried away, and is well aware that the immediate task is simply to secure a regular place in the starting line-up.

"I can't wait [for the new season], honestly. I feel that we are ready to go again and take motivation from the last season," he continued. "Because as you said, it was not the best what we should do. We didn't end up there where we wanted to. So now we're going to go for it again.

"Obviously [we have] a new manager. Everyone is motivated. I think I see in everybody's eyes that he wants to play. And if you want to play, you have to give your best. And from there on, the manager is going to decide who is going to play. But everybody is on zero right now."
