New footage reveals what caused heated Curtis Jones argument with Dominik Szoboszlai in Liverpool friendly

New footage has shown what appeared to start an argument between Curtis Jones and team-mate Dominik Szoboszlai after Liverpool's 1-0 pre-season friendly win over Wrexham.

The Reds secured victory in their second match under new head coach Andoni Iraola, with Rio Ngumoha scoring the only goal of the game against Championship opposition on 75 minutes.

The fixture was taking place as part of their pre-season tour of the United States, with Liverpool having beaten Sunderland 4-2 in Nashville on Saturday.

It was a young Reds side that took to the pitch in New York against Wrexham, with a number of their first team players still on their mandatory breaks after the World Cup.

Two of their top stars who have been present throughout the pre-season camp are midfielders Jones and Szoboszlai, who played no part in the World Cup. Jones was not selected in England's final squad, while Szoboszlai and Hungary did not qualify.

Szoboszlai started in the win over Wrexham and was taken off on 75 minutes, while Jones was brought on at half-time.

But footage posted on social media showed the pair involved in a heated argument as they walked off the pitch after full-time.

Now, a new clip has emerged which shows the pair initially in deep discussion with left-back Kostas Tsimikas, who then takes off his captain's armband and throws it to the ground.

Szoboszlai was Liverpool's captain for the match, with Tsimikas - a second half substitute - taking over the armband when the Hungarian was replaced.

Jones then remonstrates with Tsimikas before picking the armband up. He then embraces Szoboszlai with his other arm before applauding the crowd in attendance in New York.

But the argument then broke out between Jones, Szoboszlai and Tsimikas, with Jeremie Frimpong then walking across to intervene before escorting Jones away from the scene.

Szoboszlai was asked about the argument during his pre-match press conference before Liverpool take on Leeds on Sunday - and offered a notably cryptic response.

"Yeah, I think now a couple of guys left, and we are maybe not the oldest in the team, but we have been here for a long time," he said.

"Flo [Wirtz] is the same example. Ryan [Gravenberch] is the same example. Macca [Alexis MacAllister], if he comes back. Curtis, Alex [Isak], Virgil [Van Dijk], Alisson, Joey [Joe Gomez].

"We are all in the same boat. We want the best for the club, and for each other. So that means that we have a captain, Virgil, and we'll follow him everywhere, what he and the gaffer are saying.

"I think I can talk from everybody's side that we want to be successful this season. It's long-term, because we have a new manager and the team has been changed. It's maybe not in a couple of months, but in the long-term I think it will work out."
