Scott McTominay gave an interesting answer when he was asked why players improve after they leave Manchester United.
Since arriving in Naples in August of 2024, McTominay’s career has been on an upward trajectory, and he has achieved things he likely never anticipated.
Following his £25.7 million move from Man United to Napoli, the 28-year-old quickly settled into life in Campania, helping Antonio Conte’s side win a second Serie A title in just three seasons while also securing the Player of the Season award in his maiden campaign.
And due to his remarkable performances, McTominay will forever be loved by the Neapolitans for years to come.

The 28-year-old currently plays in a more attacking role than he did during his time at United, which lends itself to his increased goals tally, scoring 19 times in 58 appearances for the Italian side.
The Scotland international was also important in Steve Clarke’s team qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup – the nation’s first since 1998.

So, due to an improvement in McTominay’s fortunes, fans have asked why he couldn’t do all this while playing for United.
The midfielder is one of several players who have seen an improvement since leaving the club either on loan or permanently in recent seasons, with Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford, and Antony all performing well for other teams.
The topic was put to McTominay by Kate Scott in a recent interview with CBS Sports.
“It’s just too easy an excuse [to blame the club], and say, they left Man Utd and are doing well,” the midfielder said.
“In my last year, I did well, I scored ten goals and won a trophy, and with Marcus [Rashford] obviously there were different issues which might have transpired which we won’t go into, but Marcus is a top player, and he’s always been a top player, he’s one of the club legends and scored so many goals for Man United.”
McTominay then homed in on the “spotlight” at the club, making things “a lot worse” when players go through a difficult patch.
He then explained how the club helped him with all facets of his game, including nutrition and training, before claiming that “everything is there for you to succeed.”
McTominay also described how players have to “earn those minutes” at United before praising captain Bruno Fernandes as someone who does that.
“It’s not like they don’t give you certain things that other clubs do,” McTominay added.
“They do [give you everything], the myth that they go away and are better players comes down to confidence. If you’re going away and playing every single game… You feel good about yourself, and you want to continue in that way.”
