Jamie Carragher and Ian Wright debated whether Mohamed Salah was right to speak out regarding his contract situation.

Carragher, 46, and Wright, 61, regularly appear on The Overlap brought to you by Sky Bet alongside fellow former professionals Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Jill Scott.

In the show’s latest episode, released on Thursday, Salah’s situation was once again a topic of discussion. The Egyptian is out of contract at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Previously, Carragher had revealed he was “disappointed” in Salah and even branded him as “selfish” following the player speaking about his future with journalists after Liverpool's 3-2 away against Southampton at St Mary’s on November 24.

On Thursday’s episode of the Overlap, Wright and Carragher both gave their updated takes on the Egyptian’s stance.

“Mohamed Salah’s people wouldn’t have thought that him coming out and saying something is wrong from their point of view, just like Jamie Carragher saying that it was out of order for him to come out and state that,” said Wright.

“Which one is wrong? None of them are wrong; it’s just about which side you’re on.

“When you get to that stage of your contract, and you’re someone like Mohamed Salah, whatever he wants, its obviously not coming from Liverpool, so they’re playing the game, and so Mohamed Salah should also play the game. He made it public so people could see what was going on.”

“My problem with Mo Salah is coming out and speaking,” Carragher explained later in the podcast.

“There should be an exception for Salah and Virgil van Dijk in that they are special players, and they never miss games. They are never injured.”

It is not just Salah and Van Dijk whose futures are still uncertain, as academy graduate Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract is set to expire in June 2025, with Real Madrid the favourite to sign him.

All three players will be able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January 1, 2025.

The Egyptian has been linked with a move to PSG and a Saudi Arabian side, but Carragher believes the Liverpool star will "stay".

“He will stay as I’m not sure there are too many options,” Carragher explained.

“He’s not ready to go to Saudi [Arabia] – he can do that in three years time. Salah is that driven as a footballer to win the record of most goals – or whatever that may be for Liverpool.”
