League One side Barnsley expelled from FA Cup as seventh-tier side reinstated to competition

League One side Barnsley expelled from FA Cup as seventh-tier side reinstated to competition

Barnsley are out.

League One side Barnsley have been kicked out of this season's FA Cup after fielding an ineligible player during their first round tie against Horsham.

The Tykes have released an official statement after the club was charged by the FA, apologising to players, staff and fans for what they describe as a 'regrettable error'.

The statement reads: "An administrative error was brought to our attention regarding the eligibility of a player who played in last Tuesday's game with Horsham FC.

"The club has fully co-operated with the investigation and has accepted the FA's decision.

"We have been in contact with Horsham FC and would like to thank the club and Chairman for their understanding and co-operation throughout this process.

"We would like to apologise to our fans, players and staff for this regrettable error. This mistake - although unintentional - falls way below the high standards we set at this club, and is simply not what you deserve.

"We have already conducted a full internal investigation and have subsequently put safeguards in place to ensure this will never happen again."

The identity of the ineligible player is yet to be officially confirmed.

Barnsley defeated Horsham in the first round of the competition, having needed a replay to progress to round two following a 3-3 draw at Oakwell.

Nicky Cadden's strike and a brace from John McAtee sealed the victory for the League One side, with all three goals coming in the first half.

Barnsley's expulsion from the competition has caused Horsham, who currently sit in ninth position in the Isthmian Premier League, to be reinstated to this season's FA Cup.

They are set to travel to League Two side Sutton on December 2, with a spot in the prestigious third round of the competition on the line.

Horsham's official statement on the matter reads: "The club acknowledges the decision of the Football Association to reinstate Horsham Football Club in the Emirates FA Cup 2023/24 competition.

"This follows the confirmation by Barnsley FC that, due to an administrative error, they fielded an ineligible player in the First Round Proper away replay against Horsham FC, which Barnsley won 0-3.

"Subject to the outcome of any appeal by Barnsley FC against the FA ruling, Horsham FC will now face Sutton United in the FA Cup Second Round Proper fixture scheduled for Saturday 2nd December."
