Jose Mourinho documentary maker reveals unusual request Pep Guardiola made to appear in Netflix series

The director for Jose Mourinho's documentary has revealed exactly why Pep Guardiola was not featured in the Netflix series.

'Mourinho', a three-part documentary on the legendary Portuguese manager, was released on Netflix on Tuesday and chronicles the highs and lows of one of the game's great characters.

The documentary on the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid manager was filmed over two years and features unprecedented access to Mourinho.

On top of that, the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Eden Hazard, John Terry, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, André Villas-Boas, Claude Makelele, Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, Javier Zanetti, Luis Figo, Marcelo, Marco Materazzi, Massimo Moratti, Petr Cech, Peter Kenyon, Ricardo Carvalho, Sami Khedira and Samuel Eto'o all feature in new, candid interviews.

Despite a very public falling-out after Mourinho suspected him of leaking stories to the media, former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas is also an interviewee.

But there was no involvement from Guardiola, Mourinho's greatest ever managerial rival who went head-to-head with him in El Clasico with Barcelona and Real Madrid.

However, it wasn't through a lack of trying, with director Joel Pearlman revealing that the production team did get in touch with the Catalan and he was happy to participate in an interview - on the condition that Mourinho ask him directly.

Speaking on the Football Ramble, Pearlman said: "We did try and get Pep Guardiola. We approached him and he said, 'Absolutely I will do this but Jose needs to ask me'. So you can imagine how that went.

"And it says everything about both characters. It was passed on. It wasn't going to happen."

Having known each other from when Guardiola was a player at Barcelona and Mourinho worked as a translator, they later renewed their rivalry in the Premier League with Manchester City and Manchester United before Mourinho moved on to Spurs.

Guardiola's personal request to speak about Mourinho follows on from 'the Special One' rejecting the opportunity to produce a video message for a special montage ahead of his 1000th game.

It came back in November when City beat Liverpool 3-0 at the Etihad. Ahead of the milestone, Sky Sports created a montage of managers past and present who had come up against Guardiola.

Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Sam Allardyce, Tony Pulis and Neil Warnock all happily obliged and Roy Hodgson even learned how to record and send a video message on his phone.

According to Jack Gaughan of the Daily Mail, Jurgen Klopp "did not need asking twice" after his Liverpool side tussled with Guardiola's City in an exciting period.

However, Mourinho did not have a message and after noticing his mission, Guardiola said to Sky's production crew, "You didn’t ask Jose, then?".

In fact, Sky had reached out to the Mourinho but he had passed up on the video message.

The docuseries, produced by those who made 'Beckham' on Netflix, began filming after Mourinho was sacked by Roma and he has since taken charge of Fenerbahce, Benfica and Real for a second time.
