Trent Alexander-Arnold criticised for 'miserable' behaviour during exchange with Real Madrid fan

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been slammed for his behaviour on social media during an exchange with a Real Madrid fan.

Alexander-Arnold ended his 21-year association with Liverpool last summer and received criticism from large sections of the fanbase after joining Real Madrid on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old rose to prominence as one of the best right-backs in Premier League history, producing 85 goal involvements in 259 appearances, and even holds the record for most assists for a defender in the competition (64) - four ahead of former teammate Andy Robertson.

But unfortunately, the defender has failed to translate such form across to Los Blancos since sealing his transfer to the Spanish giants, missing 22 games through injury last term and struggling to produce the same level of performances that earned him praise at Anfield.

Alexander-Arnold's tough campaign culminated in an omission from Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the World Cup, dealing a further blow to his confidence.

Ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, though, the former Liverpool man has an opportunity to reignite his career at the Bernabeu under new boss Jose Mourinho and has been doing his best to impress during pre-season.

The Englishman started at right back during Real's 2-2 draw in a friendly against Fiorentina, while new signing Denzel Dumfries - who was signed to provide competition for Alexander-Arnold - was deployed on the right wing.

In the 2-1 win over Ferencvaros, meanwhile, he was introduced from the bench at half-time for Dumfries, with the duo set to battle for the starting spot at right back when Los Blancos kick off their LaLiga campaign against Espanyol on August 22.

Alexander-Arnold has shown glimpses of his qualities in pre-season, including his ability to influence games through his passing range and crossing ability.

A much-improved campaign is, therefore, expected from the Liverpudlian, who has entered the spotlight off the pitch for his behaviour towards a fan.

He was captured taking a picture with Real Madrid supporters from his car - and even signed their shirt.

While that is normally seen as a thoughtful gesture, fans were quick to criticise him for not cracking a smile during the exchange.

"Could at least smile for the pictures for the kids," one fan commented.

"What’s there to be happy about, hes only a multi-millionaire that plays for one of the biggest football institutions in the whole planet," another sarcastically wrote.

"Ballon d’Or winner Trent Alexander Arnold looks miserable there. The grass isn’t always greener fella," a third said.

"This actually makes me sad to see. Was always happier signing for fans at Anfield," someone else replied, while a fifth stated: "This is what is wrong with football of today. Doesn’t take long for players to get above themselves."

Of course, a brief interaction filmed from a distance offers little insight into Alexander-Arnold's actual mood, although that hasn't stopped fans from analysing his demeanour.
