Man Utd chief's response to major concerns about only two first-team transfers so far

A senior official at Manchester United has responded to concerns over the club's summer transfer window spending thus far.

United have splashed out a combined fee of over £70 million on midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, with the pair signing from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively.

The club triggered Tielemans' £35 million release clause, while the deal to sign Santos is believed to be worth an initial £48 million.

Those moves - and the free transfer arrival of goalkeeper Karl Darlow - were announced within the space of a day between July 13 and 14, with no more incoming senior business being done since then.

There has been much speculation since then over possible arrivals, with United in the market for a left-back - as they search for competition for Luke Shaw - and a third central midfielder.

With Michael Carrick's side playing Champions League football this season, there is an accepted need for more squad depth in the first team, with the confirmed return of Marcus Rashford after his loan spell at Barcelona at least going some way to helping that in attack.

Legendary midfielder Paul Scholes has tipped them to sign another centre-back, suggesting that want-away Spurs captain Cristian Romero would be a good addition.

Man Utd address summer transfer window

With almost three weeks to go until the transfer window shuts on September 1, it's not yet time to panic for fans of United or other Premier League clubs ahead of the new season.

That is the view of one senior official at United, according to BBC Sport reporter Simon Stone.

Stone says he contacted the unnamed official to ask about the concerns surrounding United's summer spending, and was given a straight-forward reply.

"The club should be judged at the end of the transfer window," was the response.

Stone wrote, in response to a question in his latest Q&A: "I don't think Manchester United are 'done', no. Or at least if they are, they will be disappointed with the outcome.

"What United have done is make a very good job of staying under the radar."

United's need for a new midfielder might become slightly more pressing if Mason Mount is expected to miss games due to a foot problem sustained in pre-season.

The 27-year-old was taken off as a precaution after being kicked in the foot during Saturday's pre-season friendly against Paris Saint-Germain, he is expected to miss out when United take on bitter rivals Leeds in Dublin on Wednesday.
