On Friday, Fabrizio Romano broke the news that Chelsea are set to sign Renato Veiga from FC Basel. But who exactly is he, and what will he bring to Stamford Bridge?

In recent transfer windows Chelsea have followed a strategy of signing young players full of potential, and that isn't going to change this summer.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu and Omari Kellyman have all agreed to join Chelsea this summer, and they look set to be joined by Renato Veiga.

According to Romano, Chelsea will pay a package worth around €14 million for the defender.

Having already agreed personal terms with the Premier League giants, Veiga will now leave Basel's training cap to complete the move.

Following Romano's reports, David Ornstein reported that a medical has been scheduled in London for the 20-year-old.

Once that has been completed, he is expected to sign a contract valid until 2032.

Not many Chelsea fans will have heard about Veiga before, but there is a reason new manager Enzo Maresca was keen to bring him onboard.

The left-footed defender is extremely versatile, capable of playing at centre-back, left-back or even in midfield.

It's expected that Maresca will use Veiga as an inverted full-back, with the Italian coach viewing him as a perfect fit for his system.

Last season was Veiga's first full campaign in top flight football, scoring two goals and providing one assist in 26 appearances in all competitions for FC Basel last season.

Veiga came up through the ranks at Portuguese giants Sporting CP, although he never made a first-team appearance for the club.

In January 2023 he joined Bundesliga side Augsburg on a one-year loan, although the club decided to end the loan after six months.

Last summer Basel signed Veiga for a fee of around €4.6 million (£3.9m) and handed him a four-year contract.
