Millions of FPL managers are making major mistake with three transfers ahead of GW4

Three transfers could haunt millions of Fantasy Premier League managers ahead of Gameweek 4.

The opening three weeks of the 2026/27 Premier League season have passed, and approximately nine million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will have learnt a lot about their teams, with many already playing their first chip(s).

Thousands of players used the Bench Boost chip in Gameweek 1 or 2, while millions have made the mistake of transferring in players too early and paid the price when one of their transferred-in stars picks up an injury.

FPL managers make mistakes with Chelsea transfers

On Tuesday, FPL managers were punished when Andoni Iraola confirmed that Cody Gakpo missed training ahead of Liverpool's Champions League showdown against Atletico Madrid.

Gakpo was a popular pick ahead of Gameweek 4, with over 500,000 managers buying him after his 28-point return across fixtures against Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town.

Although the Dutchman is expected to return from muscle tightness for the clash with Fulham on Saturday, the 27-year-old only showcases the danger attached to early transfers - and that isn't the only mistake managers are potentially making this weekend.

Gameweek 4 is proving a popular time to use the Wildcard, with thousands, if not millions, of managers hitting the button ahead of this weekend to target players from teams with favourable upcoming fixtures.

Chelsea are one of the teams on managers' radar for their home fixture against Hull City, with many adding at least two or three attacking assets to their squad, notably Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro.

Xabi Alonso's frightening attacking trio have made an electric start to the season, and this is reflected by their popularity in FPL, with over one million managers transferring in Rogers (448,912), Palmer (353,052) and Pedro (206,820) at the time of writing.

Alonso's leading lights in attack have 10 goal involvements between them across the first three matches, and clearly, millions are confident they can continue their stunning form at home to Hull.

But returns aren't guaranteed for the popular Chelsea trio, as the Tigers have become the Premier League's surprise package on their return to the competition.

Sergej Jakirovic's men have taken seven points from a possible nine - including a goalless draw against Aston Villa last time out - and remain the only Premier League side not to concede a goal.

Jakirovic's 5-2-3 set-up has proven stubborn for the opposition to break down, as they've combined elite defensive organisation with an incredible ability to defend their box. In fact, they've faced 73 crosses this season and haven't been breached.

That statistic is expected to change this weekend against arguably the league's best attack, but Hull have refused to buckle under pressure, and they won't make it easy for Alonso's side to break them down.

Chelsea's poor recent home record vs newly-promoted clubs

In his short time in charge so far, Alonso has proven to be a polar opposite to the likes of Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior.

While the other two were focused on controlling possession and wearing opponents down, the Spaniard has prioritised springing quick transitions against an opponent's high press.

Somewhat surprisingly, Chelsea have the second-lowest average possession (36.5%) of all Premier League teams, with only Hull City averaging less (28.5%) across the first three matches.

Hull won't be as brave as other teams by leaving space on the counter for the Blues to exploit, and Alonso's side will have to be patient to break down their low block.

Under previous managers, they struggled to break down more defensive teams. Last season, they failed to beat any of the newly promoted teams at home, as they drew with Leeds and Burnley, while tasting defeat to Sunderland.

So, ahead of a week where millions of managers are bold on Chelsea's attacking assets, perhaps they shouldn't forget to underestimate a stubborn Hull City side.
