CBS Sports studio left in stitches as Jamie Carragher makes cheeky reference to bankruptcy issues
The CBS Sports team couldn't believe what they were hearing as Jamie Carragher joked about his recent financial troubles in the first Champions League show of the season.
Man City, Real Madrid and Aston Villa were among the clubs to get the 2026/27 Champions League season underway on Tuesday night as the first round of fixtures kicked off across Europe.
With the start of the Champions League season came the return of the beloved CBS Sports panel of Kate Scott, Jamie Carragher, Thierry Henry and Micah Richards, and it didn't take long for Carragher to make a joke that left his co-hosts at a loss for words.

Jamie Carragher jokes about unpaid tax bill in viral Champions League clip
Shortly after the start of the Premier League season, a surprise report emerged revealing that Carragher was facing a bankruptcy petition filed by lawyers representing HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

It was later revealed that the claim was due to an unpaid tax bill, thought to be in the region of £700,000 and £800,000.
At the time, a spokesperson for Carragher reassured that the issue would be resolved quickly, but the Liverpool legend has otherwise been quiet about the matter, until now.
While discussing his hopes for the Champions League this season, Carragher mentioned how he hoped to see Barcelona competing for the trophy and made a not-so-subtle reference to their shared financial troubles.
Speaking on CBS Sports, he said: "I think it's about time we saw Barcelona back in terms of competing where they should be, one of the best teams in the world, one of the biggest teams in the world. They've had their financial problems haven't they?"
After a slight pause he added: "Haven't we all.."
Immediately, co-hosts Richards and Scott began laughing at his self-dig, while Henry was left completely stunned at the comment.
Barcelona made the last eight of the Champions League last season, but have not won the coveted European competition since 2015.
One of the key reasons holding the Spanish giants back has been the financial issues that have followed them in recent years, with the club spending well beyond its means on both player wages and transfers.

That being said, the 2026/27 season presents Barcelona with one of their best chances yet to finally bring the Champions League trophy back to the Camp Nou.
Current odds have Hansi Flick's side as the favourites to win the Champions League this season, despite Paris Saint-Germain's dominance in the competition in recent years.
Barcelona begin their campaign at home to Feyenoord on Wednesday evening ahead of playing two English sides in Aston Villa and Manchester City later in the league phase.
