Xabi Alonso reflected on a truly bizarre first appearance for striker Emmanuel Emegha in Chelsea colours in the Carabao Cup fourth round defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday.
The Blues played out a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes at Anfield, with Morgan Rogers and Cody Gakpo scoring penalties minutes apart in the first half.
The cup tie went all the way to penalties, where Liverpool prevailed 6-5. Wesley Fofana blazed his spot-kick over the bar to hand the Reds the victory after Joe Gomez had converted with aplomb.
Liverpool will take on Andoni Iraola's former side Bournemouth in the quarter-finals.

Emegha's weak penalty was easily saved by Giorgi Mamardashvili and capped off a dismal debut for the 23-year-old, who joined in the summer from partner club Strasbourg.
Emegha played 22 minutes in his first appearance, entering the fray in the 68th minute. Just minutes after coming on, he bizarrely went after Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk for reasons which still remain unclear.
Xabi Alonso's comments on Emmanuel Emegha after his Virgil van Dijk incident and penalty miss
Van Dijk passed the ball back as Emegha chased him down but then in an truly ridiculous moment, he proceeded to charge into him and bundle the former Southampton defender over.
Van Dijk was furious and confused in equal measure, with Alan Smith describing the moment as "strange" on commentary. The antics are even more perplexing considering Emegha is Dutch and Van Dijk is his national team captain.
After just five touches and losing all but one of his six duels, Emegha missed what could have been the decisive penalty.
Speaking to to ITV post-match Alonso said the penalty miss from Emegha was "an experience that everyone has to take" as he said there were "no regrets for anything".
In his press conference, Alonso added: "It's hard to make your debut with that moment that could mean everything for him, for us.
"'But it is about learning from all the experiences, even like today when it was a sad one. And I said it myself, as soon as we get on the bus, I move on, I think about United".
Chelsea feel Emmanuel Emegha has the potential to be better than striker they let go
A forgotten signing in the summer transfer window, Emegha joined on a long-term deal until 2033 after making just four starts in Ligue One last season due to injury.
The deal was finalised after an agreement was struck in September 2025 but he has suffered injury set-backs which meant he was only in one matchday squad prior to the Liverpool loss.

According to The Athletic, Chelsea allowed Nicolas Jackson to leave for Aston Villa as they believe Emegha is the perfect candidate to replace and surpass him.
His last competitive start was back in April in the UEFA Conference League semi-final first leg but more minutes may be in order after Joao Pedro's injury.
Alonso previously said the player has "special qualities" and said "it is going to be very, very difficult for defenders when he is in good shape.”
