Floyd Mayweather’s Ugly Bust-Up With His Dad Almost Turned Physical

Floyd Mayweather’s Ugly Bust-Up With His Dad Almost Turned Physical

“Come put me out your gym, punk… I’ll beat your ass,” yelled Floyd Senior as the pair were separated during a blazing row in 2011.

Money Mayweather and his father threatened one another as a bitter row got personal, leading to the pair being physically separated in the gym.

Your family arguments have got nothing on the Mayweather clan. The pound-for-pound great and his dad have a volatile relationship - as was shockingly captured by HBO cameras before Floyd's 2011 fight with Victor Ortiz.

The flashpoint peaked with the boxer furiously repeating: "Get the f**k out of my gym!" While his dad responded: "Come put me out your gym, punk... I'll beat your motherf***ing ass."

The 58-year-old added: "41 and one!" as they square up, indicating that he himself will put a dent in his son's perfect 41-0 fight record. Floyd Junior replied with a mantra of: "You couldn't fight worth shit."

Most family feuds this bad start with a game of Monopoly - but the Mayweather bust-up began with a debate over which trainer was responsible for Floyd's success.

The boxer turned professional under his uncle Roger Mayweather, switched to his father after Floyd Senior's prison sentence for drug trafficking ended in 1998, but had returned to Roger by the time of the Ortiz fight.

"You can't train nobody when you're locked up," said Floyd, responding to his dad's claim that he honed his son's skills. "This [Roger] is my trainer right here! Jealousy don't get you nowhere."

"What jealousy? Who is jealous?" his father replied, adding: "I am the best."

The 34-year-old boxer then rants about the other fighters who've left Floyd Senior, including Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, ending with a stinging: "No fighter wants to be with you."

Ouch. It makes for painful viewing as Floyd tears into his father, who responds by getting right up in his son's face.

Several hangers-on - plus Roger Mayweather - are clearly uncomfortable as they come between the pair as things threaten to get physical.

Led away to a dressing room, an agitated and shirtless Floyd said: "Roger Mayweather made the Mayweather name - and I took it to the next level.

"Because when it's all said and done there's only two Mayweathers that count: Roger Mayweather and Floyd Mayweather - f**king and I'm not no 'Junior'."

Roger, who died at the age of 58 this month, did have a more impressive boxing record than Floyd's dad, becoming a two-weight world champion.

He was also in the younger Floyd's corner for the start of his pro career, though Senior's claims that he taught his son to box are valid, as he had Floyd practising punch combinations as a child.

It's hard to watch a son aggressively rip into his father, but it is worth recalling that Mayweather - while far from an angel - hasn't had an easy time with his family.

As a two-year-old, he was used by his dad as a physical human shield when Mayweather Senior was threatened at gunpoint by a relative.

"I used my mind because if I hadn't, I wouldn't be here today," he told the BBC when asked about it in 2015. "I was still shot in the leg. What would you do with a gun on you?"

Yikes. At least the all-time great fighter and his father eventually got past this tense altercation.

By the time of Mayweather's 49th fight against Andre Berto in 2015, Floyd Senior was back in his son's corner - and the boxer delivered a loud tribute to his dad before the 12th round.

"Everything you taught me from day one, I'll always remember," said Mayweather looking into his father's eyes. Adding: "I love you. I love my father!"

Emotional stuff. Let's hope the complex Mayweather father-son dynamic stays strong in the aftermath of Roger's early passing this year.
