Andre Onana offered stunning route out of Man Utd as Erik ten Hag considers drastic step

Onana has been offered a surprise Old Trafford exit route.

Andre Onana has been offered a surprise potential exit route from Manchester United if he leaves the club in the summer.

United splashed out a fee of £47.2 million to sign the Cameroon international from Inter Milan in July - a month after he reached the Champions League final with the Italian giants.

Onana was brought in by Erik ten Hag primarily for his distribution abilities, with the Dutchman identifying that area as in need of improvement following David de Gea's departure.

But the 27-year-old has found it difficult at Old Trafford thus far amid high-profile errors.

His mistake led to United conceding the opening goal in the 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last month - and TV cameras spotted the goalkeeper looking devastated afterwards.

His misplaced pass against Galatasaray led to United giving the ball away in a dangerous area, and Casemiro was subsequently sent off for a foul as he looked to win it back.

Onana was then criticised for an error during the 2-1 defeat to Brentford last week.

While the goalkeeper is just three months into his Old Trafford career, there is already pressure on him to turn things around after a challenging start.

According to ESPN, United are backing their new number one goalkeeper, but manager Erik ten Hag is prepared to drop Onana should his poor form continue.

And should both parties decide to move on come season's end, there may be a solution.

That solution could be a return to previous club Inter Milan. Speaking at the Gazzetta dello Sport Festival, the Italian club's CEO Giuseppe Marotta refusing to rule out a sensational return to San Siro for Onana.

When asked about the possibility of Onana coming back to Italy, Marotta commented (quotes via Football Italia): "Anything can happen in football, even if those who do not always have positive results."

The Italian went on to elaborate on how Inter profited from their side of the deal to sell Onana: "It was an important experience for him and for us.

"It was also a very successful deal for us to get him for free [from Ajax] and sell him for all that money."
