Bruno Guimaraes issues statement after Eddie Howe's sacking in major Arsenal transfer hint

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has posted a parting message on social media after Eddie Howe's departure.

On Thursday, Howe's shock exit from Newcastle was confirmed after an incredible five years at St James' Park.

The 48-year-old transformed the Toon from relegation candidates to a side capable of mixing it with the best teams, qualifying for the Champions League on two occasions.

Howe also wrote his name into the club's history by winning the Carabao Cup against Liverpool in 2025 to end their 70-year trophy drought.

Despite all of his success, the Englishman felt he couldn't carry on in the dugout after admitting he had no control over transfers.

Newcastle have sold several key players in recent seasons, most notably Alexander Isak's club-record departure to Liverpool in 2025, as well as the exits of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali this summer.

Howe even hinted after the 4-1 defeat to Bristol City in pre-season that captain Bruno Guimaraes could be next to leave as he closes in on a move to Arsenal.

According to L'Equipe, the Gunners have had a £77 million bid accepted by the Magpies on Friday, with bonuses and agent fees still to be determined.

Earlier in July, Guimaraes informed Newcastle chiefs that he wanted to leave the club - but unlike Isak - wouldn't force a move away from the North East.

The Brazilian has also asked the hierarchy to delay his travel to La Manga for a pre-season training camp, and it appears a switch to the Emirates is fast approaching.

Guimaraes has made an everlasting impact since joining Newcastle from Lyon for £40 million in January 2022.

Becoming arguably one of the Premier League's best midfielders, the 28-year-old has played a pivotal role in multiple Champions League campaigns, as well as lifting the Carabao Cup.

Last season, the Brazil international produced 15 goal involvements in 29 top-flight appearances, making supporters fall in love with him even more.

Guimaraes also had a positive relationship with Howe and has shared an emotional message on his Instagram story, thanking the manager for helping him grow as a player and person.

He wrote: "Ed, how could I ever put into words how grateful I am to you? First of all, I want to thank you for bringing me to this club. Thank you for everything you've done for me, for helping me grow not only as a player, but more importantly, as a person.

"You gave me the honour of being captain - of being your captain. That is something I will never forget and will carry with me for the rest of my life.

"Sharing the day-to-day with you and having you as my manager has been a privilege. I'm truly grateful for every opportunity, for the trust you placed in me, and for every moment we shared together.

"Without a doubt, you are one of the best managers I've ever had. Please know that my gratitude will always remain, and that you will always have a friend in me.

"Thank you for everything. I wish you and your family nothing but happiness, success, and all the very best. With affection, Bruno."

Guimares scored 31 goals and assisted 32 in 195 appearances under Howe, who was largely responsible for helping him realise his potential.

Unfortunately for Newcastle fans, the Brazilian's close relationship with their former manager and his thoughts about his exit only put his future into further doubt.

In fact, it feels only a matter of time before he officially seals his transfer to Arsenal as the club closes in on the appointment of Matthias Jaissle on a four-year contract.
