Ruben Amorim explains why Patrick Dorgu started at right wing-back on his debut and it's got people talking

Dorgu played 45 minutes against Leicester before being brought off.

Ruben Amorim mentioned the data analysis tool Wyscout as he explained why Patrick Dorgu was deployed as a right-wing back in their FA Cup clash against Leicester City.

Dorgu was handed his Manchester United debut on Friday night, just days after completing a £29 million move from Serie A side Leece.

The 20-year-old defender, who became the first arrival of Ruben Amorim's tenure, won more duels (6) than any other player on the pitch before being replaced at half-time by Alejandro Garnacho.

He certainly impressed in spells but eyebrows were raised when Dorgu started the FA Cup fourth round tie on the right hand side, despite primarily playing on the opposite flank for Leece.

Known for his versatility, Dorgu has split his career appearances between the left and right side, which was a key reason behind Amorim's decision to sign the player in January.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Portuguese head coach was asked to explain his thinking behind playing Dorgu on the right instead of the left against Leicester.

"No, he played a lot of time at Lecce on the right and the left," Amorim told reporters. "That is one of the characteristics we pay attention to a lot, to have a player like him."

"He was a little bit anxious with his first touch of the ball," the 40-year-old added. "It’s a different league for him, different speed of the game, but he did well. He has pace, strength, he will improve a lot and we as a team need to play better to help these new guys to perform at the right level."

Amorim then brought up Wyscout, a data analysis tool that offers comprehensive video coverage and detailed statistical analysis of thousands of players across almost 100 countries.

With a smirk, he said: "You can see in Wyscout he can play both sides."

Amorim's decision to mention Wyscout, even if it did seem in jest, became a talking point after United secured their place in the FA Cup fifth round with a 2-1 win.

One said: "The question is why did he play Dalot on the left, when he just got a LWB?" and another commented: "No way Amorim logged into his Wyscout account and decided to play Dorgu on the right."

A third wrote: "Amorim getting grilled for that Wyscout comment is too funny most managers use that software."

A fourth said: "All the people surprised by Dorgu playing on the right are essentially just admitting that they don't understand the player they want to talk about. He is completely capable of playing there & he fits systematically. It's a different topic than arguing about Dalot at LWB."

A fifth added: "He ain’t wrong to be fair, a lot of people criticised his decision but Dorgu has played on the right multiple times."
