Oliver Glasner was asked about the Manchester United job before Ruben Amorim was dismissed from his role.
On Monday morning, Amorim was told of his sacking after the club's leadership team "reluctantly decided that it is the right time to make a change" following a turbulent 14-month period in charge.
Amorim, who was appointed in November 2024, had the worst win ratio (32%) and the worst goals conceded per game ratio (1.53) of any United manager.
United decided to part ways with Amorim before the 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday, after a tense meeting between Amorim and Jason Wilcox, the club's director of football, about Amorim's tactical system.
"The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future," a statement from United read. "Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday."

Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner is currently the 7/2 favourite to get the job, according to Betfair.
Glasner, who joined Palace in February 2024 following successful stints in Germany at Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, led the club to their first major trophy when they lifted the FA Cup in May last year.
He helped transform a team flirting with relegation into a hard-to-beat outfit with ambitions of breaking into the Premier League top six.
Naturally, the 51-year-old was linked with the Manchester United job last summer as Amorim continued to struggle. In fact, Glasner was asked about the rumours while speaking to Austrian publication Kicker.
As per Sports Witness, Glasner was asked the following question in September: "There are a lot of rumours circulating about you again. From Manchester United in the short term to all sorts of top clubs after 2026. Are these reports annoying or amusing you, and can you reveal when you and Palace plan to discuss your future again?”
Glasner replied: “I follow all the rumours – and that’s all there is – neutrally and completely relaxed. Focusing on the daily work with my players and coaches, and trying to enjoy it as much as possible.”
Oliver Glasner would take Man Utd job 'in a heartbeat'
A few weeks after his comments, it was reported that Glasner would take the United job 'in a heartbeat' if it was offered to him.
"My information is that if Oliver Glasner was offered the Manchester United job, he would take it in a heartbeat," said journalist Ben Jacobs.
"As a consequence, Manchester United will feel there are quality managers, and some with Premier League experience, that will be willing to move. There are options closer to home."
He added: "I don't think Glasner playing a similar system to Ruben Amorim will really put off Manchester United."

"Believe me, I'm never thinking about my future right at the moment. It's not important right now," he said.
"I know there are so many rumours. But I don't know how many clubs I managed in the last three months and I'm still sitting here. As soon as we take a decision, number one, the players will hear it, and, number two, (the media) will hear it."
