Footage of Ruben Amorim meeting several Manchester United players, including Harry Amass, has left fans questioning whether the Portuguese coach ever lost the dressing room, as both hugs and cold shoulders were exchanged.

Amorim was reunited with many of his Manchester United players after taking his new side, AC Milan, to Old Trafford as part of the Serie A side’s pre-season tour.

The Portuguese manager endured a miserable tenure in Manchester, and was sacked last season in favour of ex-player and club legend Michael Carrick.

In the dying embers of his managerial stint with the Red Devils, rumours began to circulate that Amorim had lost the dressing room: typically, the nail in the coffin for failing coaches.

One such player rumoured to be at odds with Amorim was then-loanee Amass, at Sheffield Wednesday after being sent away by the Portuguese coach.

Amorim bizarrely hit out at the 19-year-old after a string of disappointing results stating: “Amass is struggling in the Championship,” when questioned about youngsters such as the then 18-year-old, Kobbie Mainoo, Chido Obi and Toby Collyer receiving opportunities.

After returning to his old stadium with AC Milan, and leaving with a 4-2 victory, footage of the coach’s interactions with Amass and other Manchester United players has left fans questioning whether the criticism directed at Amorim, and rumours of losing the dressing room, were widely exaggerated. But three players giving the cold shoulder have complicated readings of the event.

Amass responded to the Portuguese boss’ words with an Instagram story: an image of him holding Sheffield Wednesday’s Player of the Month award, to combat the claim that he was “struggling.”

Fans were divided following the incident, with some questioning Amorim's decision to publicly criticise the youngster, and others claiming that Amass' post was representative of a trend among Red Devils academy graduates in hitting out at authority.

Now, both player and ex-manager were captured on camera shaking hands and hugging after the Red Devils lost 4-2 to his Serie A side, and the warm greetings didn’t end there.

Among the players standing in a circle around Amorim were Matheus Cunha, Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro, all of whom received a handshake and embrace from their former manager.

However, it also appears that Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot and Mainoo were three players who gave the Portuguese coach the cold shoulder, and stayed away from the hugging circle.

Amorim, who won just three of his last 11 Premier League games with Manchester United prior to seeing the sack, coached a comprehensive victory for AC Milan against his former club.

The Serie A side returned from a goal down twice, prevailing 4-2 with more shots, passes, less goalkeeper saves and higher xG than the Red Devils.

Goals from Goncalo Ramos then Ruben Loftus-Cheek secured the win shortly before and after the 70th, with both sides making 15 substitutions between them.

The footage of Amorim meeting his former players after the match, paired with the result, possibly indicate that his tenure wasn’t as much of an individual failure as Manchester United fans have pointed out since Carrick took the job, but the three potential snubbings raise questions.
