Ruben Amorim is on the verge of AC Milan history that only happened once at Man Utd

Ruben Amorim is closing in on an astonishing piece of history that no AC Milan manager has achieved since 1958.

Amorim took over at Milan at the beginning of the summer after the club parted company with Massimiliano Allegri.

The Italian giants missed out on Champions League qualification and only scored 53 goals in Serie A - something of a common complaint when it comes to Allegri's sides over the years.

Amorim, in his first job since being sacked by Manchester United in January, is the man tasked with returning Milan to Europe's elite. And he has made a strong start.

Milan have won both of their opening Serie A games of the season, beating Torino 2-1 on the opening weekend before a 2-0 win over Venezia at San Siro.

That means that, ahead of this weekend's fixtures, Amorim can become the first Milan boss to win his first three matches in charge in Serie A since 1958.

Various elite managers, such as Carlo Ancelotti, Fabio Capello and Arrigo Sacchi, all failed to achieve the feat.

The last manager to do so was Luigi Bonizzoni, who won his first three matches in charge at the beginning of the 1958/59 season.

Milan lost twice all season and went on to claim the Scudetto.

Two years earlier, Giuseppe Viani won his first three matches in charge at the beginning of the 1956/57 season.

Though Milan lost their next two matches, they only tasted defeat once more until March and ultimately won the Serie A title.

The issue for Amorim - who only achieved the same feat once in the Premier League during his time at Manchester United - is that Milan must travel to Turin to take on Juventus on Sunday.

While Juve are not the force they may have been a decade or more ago, they have won both of their league matches this term without conceding under Luciano Spalletti.

Juve, Milan, Atalanta, Lazio, Inter Milan and leaders Roma all hold a 100 per cent record after their first two Serie A matches of the season.

Milan spent big during the summer transfer window, with striker Goncalo Ramos arriving from Paris Saint-Germain for a club-record fee of €70 million.

They also spent €45 million, plus €20 million in bonuses, to sign former Chelsea winger Diego Moreira from Strasbourg. And Omari Hutchinson has joined from Nottingham Forest on an initial season-long loan with an option to buy.

That spending has been partially offset by sales, with Rafael Leao joining Galatasaray for €45 million, but Milan appear to be in a stronger position than last season.

Speaking ahead of Milan's 2-0 win over Venezia, Amorim explained what he wants to see from his squad during the 2026/27 season.

"We need to give the team stability and develop a way of playing that allows everyone to be involved throughout the season," he said in a press conference. "We always want to be competitive, both in Serie A and in Europe.

"We need to be able to change personnel. We need different qualities depending on the opposition and what the game requires, so everyone has to be ready when the game requires.

"For me, concentration is fundamental. We can't afford to focus on the details in the big games and then not show the same level of attention against opponents that people might consider easier.

"We have to approach every game as if our next opponent were the best team in the world. If we stay focused, we can beat anyone. If we don't, we can even lose to a Serie B side."
