Alex Ferguson Exit 'Cost' Man Utd Millions as Departure Payments Revealed

Manchester United had to pay a large sum following the club legend's retirement.

The exact amount of money that Manchester United has spent following the departure of each of their recent managers has been revealed.

Since legendary manager Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, nine different men have led Manchester United from the dugout, six of which were appointed as full-time managers.

After winning a highly-impressive total of 38 trophies across 26 seasons in charge at Old Trafford, Ferguson is widely regarded as one of the best Premier League managers of all time.

However, when he decided to call time on his spectacular career it left United with incredibly difficult shoes to fill, an issue that many would say they are still dealing with today.

But that wasn't the only downside to Ferguson's departure, as his decision to leave also cost United several millions, with each subsequent manager also costing the club a significant amount of money.

Shortly after Ferguson decided that he was going to be leaving United at the end of the 2012/13 season, the Scotsman identified his fellow countryman David Moyes as his replacement.

Of course, with a new manager came a new set of staff and coaches, meaning that many of the personnel that worked at the club during the end of Ferguson's reign had to be let go.

According to a report from The Athletic, despite the fact Ferguson was not sacked, the costs of removing his coaching staff that Moyes did not want to keep on totalled around £2.4million.

In April 2014, just 10 months after his appointment, Moyes was sacked by Manchester United, starting a long and costly chain of events as United searched for their ideal Ferguson replacement.

Removing Moyes and his staff is reported to have set United back £4.9m, the cheapest of their recent sackings.

Louis van Gaal followed Moyes in the Old Trafford dugout and lasted two years before United paid £8.4million dismiss the Dutchman and his assistants.

Jose Mourinho followed Van Gaal but two and half years later he was sacked after the club felt he hadn't made sufficient progress having spent nearly £400m on 11 players.

Dismissing the Portuguese manager and his team cost United a massive £19.6m, the largest managerial payout in the club's history.

After a promising spell as interim manager, club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came in as Mourinho's replacement but cost the club £9.1m when he was sacked in November 2021.

His replacement, Erik ten Hag, cost the club £10.4m when they decided to sack him less than four months after triggering a one-year extension to his contract.

It is not known exactly what Ralf Rangnick, who stepped in as interim manager when Solskjaer went, was paid after he never took up the two-year consultancy role he had agreed to take following the 2021/2022 season.

His permanent departure in May 2022 lines up with a compensation payment of £14.7m, but club officials at the time stated that this was not exclusively paid to Rangnick and his team.

Amid the rising pressure surrounding current boss Ruben Amorim, questions have been raised about how much the club would have to pay should they decide to sack him in the coming weeks.

Although the exact amount is not known, the Portuguese boss has a contract until June 2027, meaning any early termination is likely to be costly.
