Newcastle fans urge Ross Wilson to immediately sell player who had 'stinker' vs West Brom

Newcastle United fans have urged the club to sell striker Nick Woltemade after his poor Carabao Cup performance against West Bromwich Albion.

After going 1-0 down through Isaac Price inside the opening 20 minutes, the Magpies thought they'd turned the game around with goals on either side of half-time.

Bazoumana Traore scored his first for the club following his £43 million switch from Hoffenheim, turning the ball home in the 38th minute, before Harvey Barnes - who replaced Traore at the break - bundled the ball home immediately after the interval.

But the Championship side refused to buckle after going behind and thought they'd done enough to take the game to penalties when Price scored his second with 13 minutes left on the clock.

However, Barnes bagged a brace moments later, sweeping the ball past Baggies goalkeeper Matt Ingram from an Amar Dedic pull-back to grab his second assist of the game.

Barnes was Newcastle's hero as he fired them into the third round of the Carabao Cup, showcasing his importance to Matthias Jaissle, whereas other first-team stars failed to impress - notably Nick Woltemade.

The German international was making his first appearance under Jaissle after being left on the bench during the 2-2 draw to Liverpool on Sunday, and he struggled to demonstrate why he deserves to start for the club.

In his 90 minutes on the pitch, Woltemade only registered one shot on goal, lost possession five times, and completed just one dribble, with many fans urging sporting director Ross Wilson to sell him.

"Wish Newcastle would just take a hit and sell Woltemade for whatever we can or swap him or loan him," one supporter wrote.

"Wicked cross by dedic, sorry but we need to sell Woltemade," another agreed, while a third said: "Woltemade has had another absolute stinker."

Others also pointed out that the 24-year-old doesn't fit into Jaissle's energetic, high-pressing system, having made similar complaints during Eddie Howe's time at the club.

"Really hate to say this but Nick Woltemade is not cut out for English football it does not fit his playstyle; it's time to sell him. I really liked him as well, but you can just see it's not working for him," a fourth commented.

"Feel for Woltemade clearly a player who is lacking confidence and doesn’t fit the style of the manager. Would love to see him succeed but really can’t see him lasting at Newcastle beyond next season," someone else stated.

Nick Woltemade could return to Germany before the transfer deadline

Woltemade made a bright start to life in the North East after completing his £69m switch from Stuttgart last summer, scoring four goals in his first five Premier League appearances.

But that joy was short-lived as he's since bagged just seven in 47 matches for the club, while falling down the pecking order at St James' Park.

The German's tall, languid frame just doesn't suit the fluid, energetic football Jaissle likes to play, and this was evident against West Brom.

Meanwhile, with Yoane Wissa and Will Osula clearly being his preferred options, it has potentially opened the door for Woltemade to leave.

As reported by Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur on August 23, Woltemade wants to leave the Magpies before the September 1 deadline, with Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig both showing an interest.

A return to Germany - if it happens - could be the perfect opportunity for him to rediscover his form and confidence, although it's unlikely the club will recoup the £69m they paid for him.
