Roy Keane has called for Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe to replace Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, but what has the Magpies boss said about potentially succeeding the Portuguese?
Due to Amorim being sacked after just 14-months in charge of the club on Monday (January 5), several names have already been heavily linked with becoming the next permanent head coach of Man United.
Well respected managers such as Enzo Maresca, Luis Enrique, Oliver Glasner and Roberto De Zerbi are among those linked, but first the club will likely appoint a caretaker head coach for the duration of the 2025/26 campaign with ex-Red Devils players Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick, and Darren Fletcher – currently in charge on an interim basis - having all held talks about filling the vacancy.
But former United captain Keane has proposed the idea of current Newcastle boss Howe taking over at Old Trafford.

Keane explained how he loves his “calmness” before suggesting that United “need a little bit of that”.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane explained: “When his teams are at it, they'll play good football. He has his critics, but I like what he's done at Newcastle.
"We've seen with our previous [appointments], we like people with emotions, but he's got that calmness. The job he's done at Newcastle, Champions League, and winning a cup, I'd be happy to see him go in there."
Howe has managed both Bournemouth (x2) and Newcastle in the Premier League, as well as enjoying a short spell at Burnley.

Since Howe took charge of Newcastle in 2021, he has secured Champions League qualification twice and won the 2024/25 Carabao Cup – the club’s first major trophy in 70 years.
So, what has he said about taking over the 20-time English top-flight champions, and would he be willing to leave what he’s built at Newcastle behind?
Speaking in a press conference on Tuesday (January 6), Howe was asked: “In the last week you have been linked with the Chelsea job and the Manchester United job, is there anything that would tempt you away from Newcastle United?”

He started his response by saying “No… not at this current time” before going on to say he was “happy” in his current role.
Howe said: “I have had an unbelievable relationship with the board here, ever since I came to the football club, that has never changed… and I consider myself very lucky to have that, because there is very few managers that have the time to build those relationships, to have the confidence and trust within each other.
“I think it is really important, and if you have all of those things, you have got a higher chance of being successful. There is no guarantee, but a better chance than if the relationships aren’t working.
“So I am very happy at the moment, and hopefully that stays for a long time.

“Absolutely nothing has changed from my perspective, I am one hundred per cent here.
“Working as hard as I can, head down.
“Ignoring all the stuff that you guys (journalists) write, good or bad, because it is irrelevant.”
Newcastle are currently sixth in the Premier League on 32 points, level with United, who sit seventh after 21 fixtures.
